Exploring the pasar pagi (morning market) in Setapak, we stumbled upon Wah Chue which is the obvious local favourite brekky haunt judging by the buzzing crowd in the shop.
Setapak is a residential district about 20 minutes drive from KL city centre without traffic.
Stepping forward to the cooking station, the cheerful stall holder was cooking non stop to incessant orders.
Wah Chue 华钗 is selling fish ball noodles.
We had "rat tail" noodle soup with mixed fish balls, tau pok and fish cake.
We also had a dry "lai fun" noodle.
For the dry "lai fun" noodles, the fish balls etc are served separately in a bowl of clear soup.
We also had a bowl of fish ball soup.
We love everything we tried at Wah Chue.
We like it so much that we added another order with everything in, in a bowl of soup. Better have more now as we won't be able to get this in Johor or Singapore, the "kiasu" me figured.
The watery soup is made by boiling fresh fish bones, fish heads and skin. Dressed with a little garlic oil, the soup has a nice savoury sweet flavour. We happily drank all of it to the last drop.
The fish balls doesn't look like balls but hand torn pieces of fish paste (魚滑 in Cantonese). They are made with 100% Mackerel fish. The stall holders extract the meat from whole Mackerels and beat the fish meat into a paste by hand. Wah Chue does not use any machines at all - not even meat grinders.
The fish ball felt dense and heavy. They have a firm and bouncy bite. They have a mild briny savouriness and the natural sweet taste of fresh fish. These fish balls are
The fried fish balls have a slightly more chewy bite from the browned outside.
Love their fish cake slices too.
We spend a grand total of RM30.50 for food and drinks here. Very reasonable price, indeed.
The Chung family runs Wah Chue for over twenty years now. The second generation is also at the shop, so that is good news for Wah Chue's fans.
4-Star (out of 5). 100% fish meat with simple noodles. If you are a fish ball lover, Wah Chue is worth the drive from KL. Everything is tasty here, and healthy too. Prices are very reasonable.
