Curry Prince Penang Authentic White Curry Instant Noodle 馬來西亞咖哩王子檳城白咖哩麵

Since the Penang white curry instant noodle craze started by MyKuali last year (2013), many manufacturers have jumped on the bandwagon. The amazing thing is that many of these new kids on the block also make very good Penang white curry instant noodles too. 

Consumers are really spoilt for choice now (unlike the days when MyKuali instant noodles were in short supply everywhere).

Today, I tasted Curry Prince Penang Authentic White Curry Instant Noodle, another newcomer that joined the fray in Mar 2014.



Inside the packet were the oil fried noodle block, and three sachets. One chili paste, seasoning powder and non dairy creamer.



The oily chili paste had a slight hae bee (dried shrimp) aroma.

Presto.

My bowl of spicy hot curry noodle ready to eat within 5 minutes.



The noodles were generic, slightly soft and spongy with a wheat flavour. Bits of real chili cling to the noodles, adding flavour to it.



The medium bodied broth had a distinct hae bee (dried shrimps) aroma and robust savoury prawny flavour. The broth (thickened by non dairy creamer) felt grainy like curry from the street side stalls with spices and chili.

A pleasant spiciness lingered a while in the mouth before fading.



And now, for the trademark Johor Kaki dip stick test.



Curry Prince Authentic White Curry Instant Noodle did moderately well in the dip stick test.

Though there was non dairy creamer and seasoning powder in the broth, I was able to drink up almost all of it. I ate the whole bowl of noodles and drank nearly the entire bowl of curry because I enjoyed it. But, I don't think I would do that often as the non dairy creamer made it quite gelak (bloating sensation).

I found Curry Prince Penang Authentic White Curry Instant Noodle very similar to MyKuali's version.

MyOri Penang White Curry Noodle Original 馬來西亞正宗原味檳城白咖哩麵

Just when I thought the Penang White Curry Instant Noodle craze has finally run it's course, yet another brand jumps on the bandwagon.

This time from MyOri, another Penang White Curry Instant Noodle brand from from Penang.

Actually, there must be at least 20 brands of Penang White Curry Instant Noodle in the market now. I have about 10 brands of Penang White Curry Instant Noodle spread across my table now, waiting for me to review. Friends brought me a couple to a dozen local brands of instant noodles for me to taste, whenever they go overseas. 

Thanks buddies and no more please :D 



The usual suspects inside the MyOri Original flavour 原味 packaging. A noodle block, a sachet of seasoning powder and a sachet of curry paste.



When I snipped open the sachet, the dark red curry paste let off a slight spice, lemongrass and chili aroma.



Even though these were the steamed and fried type of instant noodles, the noodles were clean and not greasy.



My hot bowl of orange red colour curry mee was ready to eat within 5 minutes.

There was the aroma of curry spices rising from the bowl of instant noodles. Come to think of it, are you always able to detect curry spice aroma from hawker or food court stalls?

Sometimes I can't, especially at food courts.




The noodles were tender, slightly springy, but not spongy or mushy. They were clean tasting with a slight wheat flavour. 



The broth was light bodied yet the flavour was quite robust. Only mildly spicy but the spice flavours from lemongrass, chili and herbs were nice with the taste of hae bee (dried shrimps) clearly present.

Artificial flavour enhancers were used but it felt quite sparing and did not bother me.



And now, for Johor Kaki's signature dip stick test.



Moderate amount of grease. Made me cautious about drinking up the broth but it was tasty enough for me to finish almost of all it, except for the bottom most, visibly greasy bit.

I found MyOri Penang White Curry Noodle (Original flavour 原味) very similar to MyKuali's version.

MyOri Penang White Curry Noodle Extra Spicy Flavour 馬來西亞正宗超辣/原味檳城白咖哩麵

It's July 2014. The fire set alight by MyKuali Penang White Curry Noodle last year (2013) may finally be subsiding but new hot spots are still emerging hoping to burn gloriously like MyKuali before.

MyOri was among the 8 different brands of Penang White Curry Noodle which my friend from Penang brought to Johor Bahru for me to taste :P 

There are still quite a few more other brands of Penang White Curry Noodle in the market.



Inside the MyOri packet, there was a noodle block, sachet of seasoning powder and a sachet of curry paste.



MyOri's noodles were oil fried but they were slightly more slender and slightly less greasy than the average instant noodles.



The spice aroma in the curry paste was pronounced and I could also smell the hae bee (dried shrimps) and base oil (palm). 



Seasoning powder of sugar, fish and seafood powder, non dairy creamer and synthetic taste enhancers like MSG.



My bowl of noodles in a fiery looking curry broth was ready to eat within 5 minutes.



I like these slender noodles which had a slight wheat flavour and a nice light spring. MyOri's noodles were not spongy which let down other brands of Penang White Curry Noodles.



MyOri's curry broth had a relatively thick body. It felt slightly grainy on the tongue due to the ground spices. 

MyOri's curry was spicy but not overwhelming even though the packaging warned that it is "super spicy". To me the spiciness level was just nice. The spiciness lingered pleasantly for a while in the back of the mouth. The flavour and aroma of spices like lemongrass was pronounced and there were notes of shrimps.

MSG was present but it did not feel excessive.

Overall, it's a good instant curry broth that reminded me of the curry from the street side hawker stalls.

If you are far from Singapore or Malaysia and you crave curry, MyOri can get it fixed in 5 minutes :D



Johor Kaki's signature dipstick test.



MyOri did averagely well in the dipstick test. The film of oil wasn't off putting.

I ate the whole bowl of noodles and drank the entire bowl of curry because I enjoyed it.

Ibumie Penang White Curry Mee Instant Noodles

Here is another Penang White Curry Mee instant noodle bandwagoner banking in on the phenomena success of MyKuali.

This one is from Ibumie. Ibumie's owner Biz-Allianz International, founded in 1982 is a relatively big player in the Malaysian instant noodles market.



My JB friend Terrence brought me a 4-pack packet to try. Thanks Terrence.



Open the pack, there was a noodle block and three sachets inside - curry paste, non dairy creamer and seasoning powder. 



The curly instant noodles were the generic cook and oil fried type, so we can feel a very slight film of grease on the noodles in the pack.



The large sachet of white powdery non-dairy creamer (not specified but usually manufactured from palm oil).



The smaller heap of seasoning powder. Mainly salt, MSG and other synthetics.



The curry paste was aromatic with strong hae bee (dried shrimps) smell and a blend of real spices cooked in palm oil.



My bowl of hot Penang white curry mee in 5 minutes from opening the pack to serving. I followed the instructions on the pack, to the letter.



The instant noodles were very similar to MyKuali's version. Curly, spongy and soft. Tasted of wheat. 



Generic, non descript, unremarkable noodles.



The broth was round bodied, not too heavy. The flavours and spiciness were mild. 

Even though MyKuali and Ibumie's instant curry broth were quite similar, we did not get the surprised feeling like when I first tasted MyKuali. Perhaps, we are now already initiated and well accustomed to instant curry broths.



Now for Johor Kaki's signature dip stick test.



A moderate amount of oil was stuck to the dip stick.

I only took a couple of spoonfuls of the curry broth to taste as I felt put off by the MSG, synthetics and grease.

Taking a few spoonfuls, I didn't feel unease or MSG thirst afterwards.

I found Ibumie Penang White Curry Mee very similar to MyKuali's version.

The Bridge Penang White Curry Noodles 大桥槟城白咖哩面

With all the rage about MyKuali Penang White Curry Noodles taking the Malaysia and Singapore world of instant noodles by storm for the past 6 months, it's only a matter of time before competitors jump on the bandwagon.

Today, I stumbled upon The Bridge Penang White Curry Noodles 大桥槟城白咖哩面 at a Johor Bahru supermarket. This contender is priced at RM6.99 per pack of 4 packets, the same price as MyKuali Penang White Curry Noodles. 

Interestingly, The Bridge Penang White Curry Noodles is made in Senai, Johor - not Penang.



Inside the packet were the noodle block, a sachet of seasoning powder and a sachet of chili paste.

(Though the packaging indicated a sachet of non dairy creamer, there was none.)



The noodle block was made of steamed and oil fried wheat noodles.



The chili paste. There wasn't much aroma when I cut open the sachet.

I cooked the noodles following the instructions on the packaging to the letter.



My steaming bowl of curry noodles was ready to eat within 5 minutes.



The wheat noodles were light and spongy, and tasted of wheat - typical of generic instant noodles.



The broth was light bodied with a savoury and mildly spicy taste. The broth had a very slight spicy aftertaste that faded very quickly.

The spice aroma from the broth was very faint.

I wasn't wowed and was quite uninspired by the weak tasting broth.
