Stalking Mei Ling hawker centre, I stumbled upon Hup Kee Teochew Fishball Mee stall.
There was a 5 or 6 person queue at the stall in the early morning.
A young man was cooking while a young lady took orders and handled payment (there was a cash machine at the front). The young hawkers were friendly and polite, thanking customers for their patronage.
I ordered the smallest serving of the dry mee pok set which came with fishballs and pork ball in soup.
I appreciate it that Hup Kee fry their own shallot which was fresh and aromatic.
The tenderly chewy mee pok noodles were well sauced with every strand liberally coated with robustly savoury, spicy, lardy, tangy, sweet flavours.
A wee bit heavy flavours for me but that's where the soup and fish & meat balls come in for balance.
One pork ball, two fishballs, one kiow (fish dumpling) and several slices of fish cake in a cloudy but almost clear soup.
Porcine savoury salty sweet with perhaps a bit of runoff water from cooking the fish balls(?).
The fishballs were smooth outside, indicating that they were possibly factory made? (I shall double check with them next time.) Nevertheless, taste wise the lightly tenderly springy fishballs were nicely savoury sweet.
The winner in the bowl of soup was the sole (single) pork ball.
I love the porcine sweetness and savouriness of the soft tender pork balls. Bits of scallion and chili pepper punctuated the savoury sweetness with highlights of mild spicy heat, aromatics and flavours.
The slices of fried fishball were nice too.
There was one small token kiow (fish dumpling) to complete the set.
Leftovers analysis. Soup bowl dry, everything nice. Noodle bowl empty, a bit of sauce leftover means more than enough sauce. Cut chili leftover more than a bit, means noodle well sauced and contents in the soup were flavoursome enough, hence no real need for cut chili.
Hup Kee Teochew Fishball Mee was one of the food stalls at the demolished Margaret Drive food centre. Margaret Drive was one of my favourite haunts in the 1980s.

Tony, thanks for jolting my memory of Margaret Drive hawker centre. So you remember
ReplyDelete- Hai Kee charkwayteow. Lone guy who fries up nothing but charkwayteow in his minimalist stall under a naked bulb. He moved to Radin Mas? food centre and only retired recently.
- Chicken rice stall that dominated the upstairs level of the old food centre. They had extra tables and chairs laid out even outside the closed main door of the POSBank branch on weekends. Not sure which is the real McCoy, as there are chicken rice stalls in both the new Margaret Drive food centre and Mei Ling food centre claiming to be the original famous stall.
- 福星居 cherchar helmed by an old couple who are often at logger heads with each other but churned out yummy staples like harjeong chicken wings and sweet and sour pork etc
- Popiah stall
- You char kway stall
