Went to revisit JB's Pasar Borneo market in Taman Mega Ria. First port of call was Restoran Original Sarawak Kolomee.
There are about a dozen eateries around the Pasar Borneo market area. Some offer Sarawak dishes as many Sarawakians live near here and on market days, Sarawakians and Sabahans from Johor and Singapore gather here for their marketing needs like meat, seafood, vegetables and fruits.
Restoran Original Sarawak Kolomee is a small, simple, no frills coffee shop. Clean, well kept, specialising in just coffee, toast, kolomee, kampua mee and Sarawak style beverages.
So glad to re-connect with Rajan and his family who own and run Restoran Original Sarawak Kolomee. It's been 13 years!
It was Rajan who introduced me to Pasar Borneo market. The market was just outside his restaurant's kitchen's back door ๐คญ
Can say, I found Pasar Borneo market by their back door ๐คฃ๐
Anyway, eat breakfast at Original Sarawak Kolomee first before going to Pasar Borneo. That's what many visitors do on market days.
I should state it here that Pasar Borneo opens only on Weds, Sat and Sun. About 50 wet market type stalls. Most stalls are opened on Sat and Sun. On Weds, only about 15 stalls are opened. So come here only on Sat and Sun, if you are here for serious marketing.
Weds is OK for me as I got a bunch of sayur paku for RM3 and sayur midin for RM3 also. That's enough for me ๐คญ These are my favourite things.

Original Sarawak Kolomee's menu was on the wall. Just variations of kolomee and mee kampua, wanton, coffee, toasts and eggs. All simple staples of Sarawak.
I had kampua noodle and wanton.
Stir-fried minced pork and char siew over egg noodles with soy sauce, lard and fried shallot.
The stir-fried minced pork had crushed pork lard croutons blended inside.
Lean char siew slices.
Tender crunchy egg noodles enveloped in lardy, porcine, shallot oil and savoury soy sauce flavours. A very humble yet flavoursome carb dish.
But, I am not a good judge of kampua mee as I have never been to Sibu, the dish's home base before.
(I had kampua in Zhangzhou, Fujian before but that seemed like a completely different dish, so that doesn't count ๐ค )
This young Sibu couple was coming regularly to Rajan's shop for kampua mee when they were courting. Now, they bring their two year old boy for kampua mee. So, Rajan's rendition which he learned from a kampua master in Sibu must hit the spot. You can try and let us have your comments ๐ (Hope to visit Sibu one day to learn about kampua.)
To me, the wantons are a must as the little savoury sweet minced pork dumplings are a good complement to the kampua noodles.
I also had the kolomee, of course.
The same minced pork and lard crouton blend with char siew, over kolomee noodles.
It was nice - light, springy crunchy noodles in a savoury lardy sauce.
Sarawak three colour tea, of course. I can't have much of this as it was subtly bitter, with sweet over sweeter. Tea on top, then evaporated milk and gula apong syrup at the bottom.
Caught up with Rajan and Juliet whom I first met in 2012 when he first opened Restoran Original Sarawak Kolomee.
Juliet was the lead singer of Utmost Band.
I have not seen Utmost Band perform but been to Ladyhill hotel a few times for meals as I worked nearby in the 1980s. Ladyhill hotel was demolished in 1999 and the land redeveloped into a condominium.
I remember in those days, restaurants sometimes throw in swim suit "fashion shows" to attract (or was it distract?) diners (because I completely forgot what food they served) ๐ค ๐คฃ
I came to Pasar Borneo market by T20 bus from JB CIQ. I advice others to come by car or by Grab even though I will continue to take the bus because it is my idea of fun ๐คญ Don't be like Tony ๐ฌ
