Say Yes Hong Kong Dim Sum near Sutera Mall in Johor Bahru 思源香港点心

I have seen friends sharing about Say Yes Hong Kong Dim Sum 思源香港点心 for quite a while but haven't been there till today as I don't go to the Sutera side of JB much, nowadays. Say Yes is a good dim sum place as their food is better, ambiance is nicer and more comfortable than coffee shops. But, prices are about the same as kopitiam dim sum i.e. good value for money.

Johor Bahru now has a pretty dim sum hangout, if you like to indulge in the Cantonese pastime of yum cha (drinking tea) with your kakis (buddies) in a cha lao (tea house). It's simply called 茶楼 Cha Lao Dim Sum which is located at Holiday Villa Hotel.

This little shop, YamCha Hong Kong DimSum 饮茶港式点心, tucked away in quiet Taman Orkid serves one of the best dim sum in Johor Bahru.

When I arrived at the nondescript looking shop this morning, I didn't expect myself to say this by the end of brunch.

I am often asked where to get Halal dim sum in Johor Bahru. These pork free dim sum at Xin Shan Long restaurant at La Grandeur Palm Resort Johor is not certified Halal - it uses no pork, no lard. I like how the chefs here rely on fresh ingredients and use them innovatively to create flavourful pork free dim sum.

Came to Gim Cheng at Taman Daya this morning - this large corner kopitiam type dim sum shop is the most popular in JB to my knowledge.

Kak Kak Dim Sum Breakfast @ Jalan Maju near Plaza Pelangi 佳佳点心茶楼

Need early breakfast in JB, on the way up north to Malacca or KL? Restoran Kak Kak opens at 5:00am 6:30am and conveniently located just next to Plaza Pelangi (5 mins drive from JB CIQ off Jalan Tebrau). Nothing exquisite but plenty to choose from, freshly made, tastes good, and very reasonably priced kopitiam dim sum.

We passed this Chuan Xin kway teow soup shop a few times and noticed that it is always doing a brisk business. Today, we decided to stop by and give it a try.

古来云来点心 is one of those famous food names in Johor that has numerous branches registered under various similar English names. There are at least 8 shops under the 古来云来点心 brand. (The Sze Hwa 世华 and Soon Huat 顺发 bak kut teh group of shops run along the same idea.)

Puteri Pacific Hotel Johor Bahru is closed from 30 Aug 2020. There is no announcement of the reason for its closure but the closing of Malaysia's borders to tourists since Mar 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic has greatly affected its operations.

We have been regulars here in the heart of downtown Johor Bahru. Thanks to all staff for the memories.

Dim Sum at Chang Man 常满 in Taman Nusa Bestari in Johor Bahru

I was at Chang Man 常满 Hong Kong Dim Sum at the invitation of the owner Adrian Ooi. Chang Man opened for business about two months ago and there was already a steady stream of customers at the restaurant on a Monday morning. I guess this is partly because Chang Man serves dim sum, chicken rice, char siew rice and hor fun which are familiar staples that are usually in demand, and more importantly, the food at Chang Man is good. We tasted some of the dim sum, chicken/ char siew rice and hor fun at Chang Man and it was obvious that a lot of effort had been put in to create good food for customers.

I've often heard grumbles that JB does not have exquisite dim sum. Or, more accurately, foodies grumble that they can't find exquisite dim sum in JB, except at expensive restaurants.

Actually, Sally didn't say Hao Yu, she only said "dim sum at Bakawali 91".

My friends from Singapore often asked me, where can they find traditional dim sum within walking distance from City Square in JB.

Recently (2012), I stumbled upon Hock Chiang Hin 福振兴餐室, one of the oldest kopitiams in JB and it serves traditional dim sum 😄 There used to be at least three dim sum shops in JB downtown, but now, Hock Chiang Hin is the only one left.
