Johor Kaki office today was Alexandra Village Food Centre. Tried a few stalls - one of them was Hong Kong Yummy Soup stall #01-51.
Founded in 2014 by Hilda Xie and her husband who both hailed from Hong Kong, the stall has a constant lunch time queue though not very long. Soups are essential in Cantonese homes but not so mainstream yet in Singapore hawker centres.
The menu has six soups - Spareribs Soup with Lotus Root, Spareribs Soup with Winter Melon, Brazil Mushroom Soup with Chicken, Spareribs Soup with Mushrooms, Cordyceps Flowers Soup with Chicken, Night-blooming Cereus Spareribs Soup. There were a couple of non-soup dishes - Steamed Pork Ribs and Minced Pork with Mushroom (both traditional homely Cantonese staples).
First time here, I ordered Cordyceps Flowers Soup with Chicken - my first time having this. They serve soups with plain white boiled rice - I skipped the carb.
Woo... that steamy hot, tea colour soup was nice!
It was sweet, slightly herbal and savoury.
The sweetness came from dried longan 龙眼肉.
Longans are a good source of vitamin C, iron, magnesium, potassium and polyphenols (antioxidants).
Most of the herbalness came from dried "cordycep flowers" 虫草花 which are actually fungi. The dried orange colour fungus were like strands of curly noodles. Light, tenderly crunchy. Tasted of a subtle herbal sweetness.
Cordycep flowers enhance immunity, support our respiratory system, and boost our energy level.
A large piece of chicken drumstick contributed its nutrients and flavours to the tonic.
Some people don't eat the meat in tonic soups, considering them residues. I ate it lah as it still has protein, satiating though flavour was mild and flat savoury.
I finished and enjoyed everything. Will definitely be back for other tasty, fortifying and affordable home cooked style tonic soups by Hong Kong Yummy Soup. My next target is their signature 霸王花排骨汤 Night-blooming Cereus Spareribs Soup (I never tried this before).
