Sungai Kakap Estuary Village Seafood @ Restoran Pantai Indah • Pontianak Day Trip ☎ +62 812 5655 7619

Pantai Indah Kakap Seafood | Jl. Raya Sungai Kakap, RT.03/RW.01, Sungai Kakap, Kec. Sungai Kakap, Kabupaten Kubu Raya, Kalimantan Barat 78381, Indonesia ☎ +62 812 5655 7619  ⏰ 9am - 7pm
Our guide Min brought us to Sungai Kakap fishing village for sightseeing and lunch. It was a very pleasant visit and the seafood lunch was nice too.

The village is located where a tributary of Sungai Kapuas river meets Sungai Kakap river. (The main river running through Pontianak is Sungai Landak, to the north of Sungai Kakap here.)

I recommend Sungai Kakap fishing village for a half day, morning to lunch trip, if you are in Pontianak. The village is just about 1.5 hours drive from downtown Pontianak. There are at least three restaurants here, including Restoran Pantai Indah Kakap where we had our lunch.

After alighting from the car, wooden platform bridges led us to the fishermen wharves and village.

The wharves were crowded with small fishing boats.

Hauling in the day's catch.

Personally, I like seafood from small boats that return to shore within a day, so their catch is uber fresh. Most of the seafood are still in a state of mortis rigor, firm not limp and floppy.

偷吃

Oui!! 回来! Don't run!

The light sea breeze carried the smell of the sea and salted fish drying in the equatorial sun on top of the boats at the wharf.

Sampans move people up, down and across the river.

Dream house by the sea.

Seven Star Bridge Jembatan Bintang Tujuh 七星桥 connect both sides of Sungai Kakap river.

Pedestrians and mopeds shared the narrow bridge. I noticed that riders crossed the bridge carefully without bullying pedestrians on the shared path 👍 It's the kampung community spirit.

Kelenteng Hieng Thian Siang Ti 玄天上帝 is at the western end of Seven Star Bridge.

This is the heart of Sungai Kakap village, especially for the Chinese community.

Goddess of Mercy at Kelenteng Hieng Thian Siang.

Restoran Pantai Indah Kakap was a short 10-minute walk from Kelenteng Hieng Thian Siang.

The restaurant was on platforms just above the river water. The little hut was the disused old entrance (before the current bridge was built).

A new wooden bridge platform took us to the large restaurant over Sungai Kapuas river. Some people come to the platform to fish with their fishing rods.

There were individual over water pavilions or huts for groups. We were in one of these pavilions. The restaurant looks out to the west towards the Natuna Sea - it's famous for its sunset views but we didn't stay till evening.

The view of the restaurant from our table / hut.

Lots of seafood and vegetable dishes at affordable prices (except premium items).

Our orders - we were served by a doctor 😁 (Can you read what doctor wrote? 🤭 )

Some of the dishes we ordered.

Prawns were very fresh but done this way dried out the flesh a little and the savoury sweet spicy sauce overpowered the crustacean's delicate natural sweetness.

I love squid in any form - steamed, blanched, grilled or deep fried like this. It's so fresh I can still enjoy the natural sweetness and subtle squid taste.

Oyster omelette. Pinkie nail size oysters with aromatics encased in fluffy egg. Small oysters but not short of nice flavours in the soft flesh.

In Indonesia, they call this pakis. It's similar to sayur paku, one of my favourite local vegetables. Simply stir fry with a bit of belacan know as terasi in Indonesia. Wonderful in my opinion 😋 Fleshy crunchy greens with an overlay of gentle umami savoury flavour. A few chili pepper slices added a bit of heat.

(Generally, I feel that terasi is milder tasting, not as salty and has more layers of umami savouriness than their Peninsula Malaysia counterpart, belancan. I actually like terasi better.)

Kang kong greens with quail eggs, prawn, etc., bubbling, steaming in a stone pot.

A big white pomfret. Steamed cooked in a pool of savoury sweet tangy sauce with subtle ginger heat.

Hard to go wrong steaming this fish provided it is fresh.

Milky sweet in its meatiness, we were all in awe with this fish. Fresh white pomfret always wins our hearts.

This in Johor Bahru, but sadly this restaurant has closed as the owner retired.

Indonesians make good, if not the best sambals. There are many different varieties tailored to go with different dishes.

The coconut was not fragrant like Thai coconuts and the sweet juice was very slightly sourish, but the sweet meat was so soft, smooth, and juicy. I scooped out everything to enjoy 😁

Total bill came to Rp905 500 or SG$71. The pomfret alone cost Rp462 500 or SG$36.
