Koh Ngai Camping Seafood in Trang เกาะไหงแคมป์ปิ้งซีฟู้ด

When we arrived at Koh Ngai Camping Seafood in Trang, it was already dark and it was raining ☔ The restaurant was located along Nang Noi river but we couldn't sit riverside because of the rain. We were full and tired from a whole day of tastings and travelling since dawn.

Wasn't looking forward to the lot of dishes we needed to plough through at Koh Ngai but at the end of the dinner, we all agreed that the food was nice and Koh Ngai Camping Seafood was a good restaurant. We started a bit gloomy but left in high spirits and happy 😄

Couldn't see nor feel much of the atmospherics as it was raining. This looked like a party hub, if not for the rain. There were some other customers that night but all were sheltering from the rain, quiet.

Our host did a good job not to let the rain dampen our spirits.

The fried crab roll got our dinner rolling.

What more needs to be said about fresh pulled crab meat right? The delicate soft fine slivers of white meat were dense with sweet and subtle umami flavours encased in a thin crisp wrap.

Meaty fresh tender crunchy sweet prawns perched on juicy crunchy sprouts sitting in a savoury sweet spicy sauce.

Next came a big pomfret. My first thought was, it looked overdone with a pool of dark sauce and too much garnishes for such an exquisite, delicately flavoured fish.

Woah.. The meat was thick, tender, moist, and sweet, the flavours shining through despite the pool of savoury sweet sauce it was swimming in.

Fresh dou chang 斗鲳 pomfret is one of the tastiest fish there is.

Fat juicy oysters with egg and tapioca starch like the classic Teochew orh luak. Full of umami, egginess and savoury sweetness.

Seafood tom yam with squid, fish, prawn, mushrooms, lots of aromatics and sharp hot spices. Drove away the chills from the rain in a delicious way.

Fresh raw swimmer crab with savoury, zesty, spicy sauce and lots of aromatic garnishes.

Nothing to see, not very photogenic, squid cooked in their own ink - just a dark black pile.

But, squid is always one of my favourite seafood. I like the spongy chewy texture of squid and its delicate sweet flavour. Couple this with the unique taste of ink which I like. I will always order squid ink dishes when it is available.

Perhaps the boss moved by our exuberance and enthusiasm for the black squid dish, offered us grilled squid.

I love it. Simple grilling is the best for retaining the natural texture, juices and flavour of the fresh squid.

We walloped everything. Wasn't hard as everything was so delicious.

Hope to come back and next time have their live giant river prawn.
