My JB friend John brought us to Restoran Wah Yew 华友 in Taman Pelangi for traditional Teochew food. Locals refer to the restaurant as Ah Chye 阿財, the name of the owner Chef.
I've been to Wah Yew a couple of times before - it is a popular, family friendly, cosy place for get togethers and for entertaining friends with traditional Teochew fare.
Johor Bahru is also known as "Little Swatow 小汕頭" as the majority of the Chinese community in JB are Teochews.
I got a sneak peek in the kitchen, watching owner Chef Ah Chye 阿財 in action frying Hor Fun. I was surprised at the amount of work (vigorous tossing and stir frying) needed to cook a seemingly simple Hor Fun. Ah Chye is in his 70s now, so hurry if you love old school Teochew cuisine.
阿財's Hor Fun with nice wok hei 鍋氣 (smokey toasty taste from the slightly caramelised rice noodles and sauces). We have to eat this while it is still piping hot to enjoy the wok hei at its best.
Wah Yew's kampung chicken has nice natural chicken flavour but the flesh though moist was slightly chewy.
These popular Rabbit Fish (白肚魚) cooked traditional Teochew style - steamed and served cold is an acquired taste. The meat though moist was slightly fibrous and chewy, while the taste was a blend of sweet and mildly bitter. I like this :-D
Every time we are at Wah Yew, we would have their signature steamed pomfret 潮州蒸鯧魚.
Wah Yew's Teochew style steamed Pomfret always pleases. Super fresh, naturally sweet, tender, juicy flesh in simple soupy sauce and garnished with spring onion, julienned ginger, salted vegetables, parsley and other leafy greens.
Wah Yew's signature Teochew style pomfret fish porridge 潮式鲳鱼粥.
咸鱼花腩煲 Braised pork belly with salted fish and spices.
Mixed platter of Prawn Roll and Pork Roll 蝦卷, 燒卷, 五香.
Siew Mai 燒賣 Pork and Prawn Dumplings.
Simply and perfectly executed fried greens.
White radish with dried oyster soup.
The children enjoyed the dinner as much as the adults :-D

I am certain to be back :-D There are still many Teochew dishes to try at Wah Yew.
