Kaki kaki Cat likes this place especially for their seafood porridge. It's a bit off the radar, tucked away in a far corner of Johor Jaya, Jalan Dedap 9.
It's a very simple idea. Have bubbling hot porridge in seafood broth with your choice of fresh seafood in a large claypot and eat them with savoury side dishes.
It's not going to blow many minds (not mine), but you will come away feeling satiated and pleased with your comforting, homely meal of fresh food goodness. I felt I've done my palate and body a favour. (I am so tired of processed food or semi-processed food places.)
We left everything to Cat, the regular at Paddy Field. She didn't pick many add-ons, just prawns, sea bass slices and fish balls.
The prawns were fresh, shelled, meaty, crunchy, gentle crustacean sweet with a bit of umami in the head. What more can we ask of a prawn, right?
Win already lo.
The fresh sea bass slices were soft tender. Sweetish, no earthiness.
The fried garlic bits added a good measure of savoury, garlicky flavour and aroma to the porridge.
The rice soft tender sweet, some bloomed from boiling in the bubbling hot seafood stock.
The stock was highly drinkable, and I enjoyed its gentle blend of umami, savoury and sweet very much.
The best thing in the claypot were the fishballs. Made with fresh yellowtail fish meat, the tender firm spongy springy fish balls were gently sweet. Nice!
麻油鸡 Sesame oil chicken.
白切肉 Blanched pork served dressed with fried garlic bits.
香辣炒青目 Spicy fried cuttlefish.
油麦清炒 Stir fried lettuce with fried garlic bits.
The side dishes were alright. Fresh ingredients, done in a homely way. The fried garlic bits complemented and brought out the natural flavours of the ingredients well.
One of the walls of the bare bones, spartanly furnished shoplot restaurant had a full length photo mural of a street scene somewhere in old Malaysia.
I love how it gave the effect of going back in time to the past.
Will I be back?
There's something about the simplicity of seafood porridge that hooks me. I love the feel and taste of fresh natural ingredients in simple broth with rice. The fish balls here are worth coming back for. (I asked if they have cuttlefish balls, the answer was no.)
We now live in a world where real, natural food is increasingly a luxury and privilege. So, I treasure places like Paddy Field.
