| Kim Kee Geylang Pork Prawn Noodle 金记肉骨虾面 | 611 Geylang Rd, Lor 31 Geylang, Singapore 389550 🚅 10 minutes walk from Paya Lebar station ⏰ 3:30am - 11am (Mon off) |
After seeing buddy Tristan shared a delectable looking old school pork prawn noodle, I made a mental note to visit it soon 🙏 It's at Geylang Lor 31, so I got up at the crack of dawn and made my way here before it was sold out. Yeah, Kim Kee operates from 3am to 11am - its a place for night birds and early worms 🤭
Kim Kee doesn't have a high social media profile - only those who know, know. I still haven't gotten over the closure of my favourite Middle Road Pork Rib Prawn Noodle 🥹 So I am looking out for a new love. Hope Kim Kee is the one.
I reached here at 8:30am 😬 The action at the stall was frenetic but the kopitiam had a warm, friendly vibe. Many of the customers seemed to be regulars. Either Kim Kee or Geylang regulars.
Many of them ordered "老板娘我来了 Towkay neo (boss), I am here", and walked straight on to their seats 🤔
Friendly lady boss takes the orders. Her standard reply was a warning "have to wait at least half an hour ah... ."
No issue for me, nor for most of the people here.
Shared the table with a lady. Geylang still has the beautiful culture of sharing table with strangers.
When her order arrived, I can't help noticing the amazing looking fried shallot. They were freshly fried - something to appreciate as more and more hawkers now resort to tasteless factory processed (supposedly) shallot.
My order arrived. I also asked for extra fried shallot which uncle obliged.
This for $5.50 - $4.50 for the standard prawn mee soup, add $1 for the pig tail. Good value in today's market.
Ain't that freshly fried shallot and lard beautiful? 😋
I wanted pork skin as well with my bowl of prawn and pig tail but skins were all sold out 🥹
First thing first, the tea colour watery soup.
I read some comments that the soup is a little mild. I can see what they mean, it is mild to me too (but only relatively compared to those hyper umami heavy body type in vogue nowadays). Kim Kee is a little light handed on soy sauce and also prawn heads. It's a pork prawn broth leaning more on the porcine side.
But, it is easily fixed for me. Just stir in the fried shallot and let the aromatics infused the mildly umami savoury sweet soup.
Simple yellow noodles blanched just right for me. Slurpy, spongy tender subtly springy with umami savoury sweet flavour from the soup clinging to the strands.
The fresh forefinger size prawns were shelled, tender, naturally gently crustacean sweet.
Pig tail. Soft tender, mildly porcine sweet with a subtle overlay of umami savouriness from the soup.
I like this. Old school.
I don't just mean the prawn noodles. It's nice, and the stall holders were friendly and accommodating.
The folks and atmospherics were also like back in the days, more laid back, warmer. Share table with strangers, smile and we start sharing tips on where to eat.
After eating, I kaypoh kaypoh (busy body) looked around at other people's food.
Next time, I shall go for dry with extra fried shallot...
... and sambal. Must also get my pig skin and hoon tng 猪粉肠 (pork small intestine).
I wrote this sitting in front of the stall right after eating 😁 Get inspiration from the colours, sounds and smells of the stall and coffee shop. Chatting with fellow customers. It's my idea of a happy morning 🤭
Oh.. it's 10:30am. Kim Kee is still open, it's just that most of the popular items like pork intestine, skin, tail were sold out. Just the basic prawn and lean pork slices with yellow noodles. No more bee hoon also.

Glad you enjoyed it. I think must go latest 830am to get dibs on pork ribs, intestines, etc!
ReplyDeleteI think my go to for delivery is East Treasure Specialty Prawn. Modern style (means extra prawny taste) and has penang prawn noodle too. For traditional bone soup taste, I guess beach road is my go to.
ReplyDeleteTony Boey I can recommend another hidden gem -- it's Meng Kiat Prawn Noodles, 151A Serangoon North Avenue 2. It is one of the old guards that still remains in a neighbourhood where most of the coffeeshops are now acquired by homogenous chains :)
ReplyDeleteMy fave old skool Heymi 😘
ReplyDeleteTry to order the “all in” the next time… U will definitely enjoy it 😋
