Johor Bahru Nasi Ambang
Originally from Java, Indonesia, Nasi Ambang (pronounced um-bng) is very popular in Johor (and Singapore). I love nasi ambang because I love it's many colours, textures, flavours and aromas, all in one dish.

Nasi ambang is served at kenduris (traditional village festive gatherings), restaurants and also road side stalls. I love them all ;-D
.jpg)
The composition of nasi ambang vary from restaurant to restaurant, stall to stall. I enjoy trying nasi ambang from eatery to eatery as I am thrilled by the surprising twists that I might find inside the dish.

I love eating nasi ambang from road side stalls which sells the dish in little conical banana leaf packets. (Back in old Java, husbands bring home leftovers from kenduris in little packets to prove to their wives that they were indeed at a village gathering, and not somewhere else ;-p ).
I have tasted only a few street nasi ambang in Johor Bahru, so far. I am searching for more as there are many that I do not know about yet. If you know good nasi ambang stalls, please let me know by leaving a comment ;-D
Here are some of the best in JB that I've tried so far. If you are looking for nasi ambang in JB, you can give these a try ;-D
Zai Catering

Nasi ambang from Zai Catering, a little stall at the MasLee wet market in Taman Setia Indah.
White rice, fried yellow noodles, rendang chicken, lightly stir fried vegetables, fried grated coconut, salted fish, fried tempe, a splash of coconut rich, creamy curry all wrapped in fragrant fresh banana leaf.

Nothing fancy.
But, it's my little heaven wrapped in a RM4 taste grenade.
Restaurant name: Zai Catering (click for more details)
Address: Jalan Setia 3/7, Taman Setia Indah, Johor Bahru, Malaysia (beside the MasLee market)
Map: http://bit.ly/ZaiCatering
Hours: 5:00am to 5:00pm (closed on Monday)
Nasi Ambang Mak Ana

Mak Ana's nasi ambang has everything from curry chicken, fried beef liver, fried vegetables, noodles, potato cutlet, fried shredded coconut, salted fish, curry gravy and sambal chili. Mak Ana's nasi ambang is the most loaded street side one that I know in JB, at the moment.

I like Mak Ana's rendang chicken and her fresh pulpy spicy sambal chili.
Restaurant name: Nasi Ambang Mak Ana - street side stall (click for details)
Address: Along Jalan Padi Ria (beside the Petronas station), Bandar Baru Uda, Johor Bahru, Malaysia

Hours: 11:30am to sold out (usually by 1:30pm) Closed on Saturday
A.B. Rahmat Stall

A.B. Rahmat stall at Sri Tebrau market and food centre sells nasi ambang only on Weds lunch. There is always a long queue on Weds ;-D The nasi ambang here has all the usual components but doesn't have fried noodles.

Unlike the usual hard and very salty fish (which I don't quite enjoy), A.B. Rahmat serves this sweet savoury crispy fish. This small fried fish is what keeps me and many fans coming back to A.B. Rahmat.

A.B. Rahmat's sambal chili is a balanced blend of sweet, savoury and spicy. Hot enough but not too overwhelming.
Restaurant name: A. B. Rahmat Stall (click for more details)
Address: Taman Sri Tebrau Hawker Centre, Jalan Keris, Taman Sri Tebrau, Johor Bahru

GPS: 1.487056,103.768063
Hours: 11:00am to 2:00pm (nasi ambang on Weds only)
Cendol House

Cendol House's nasi ambang comes pre-packed in little cones of banana leaf and brown paper. Everything is inside this little volcano.

Packed full of flavour and aroma. Very tasty though a tad on the greasy side.
I like pre-packed banana leaf nasi ambang as somehow the flavours blend and fuse together in magical ways that erupt when we unwrap the packet.
Restaurant name: Cendol House (click for more details)
Address: Along Jalan Rahmat near the junction of Jalan Merdeka and Jalan Berlian

Hours: 11:00am to 7:00pm (Closed on Monday)
Mat Corner (stall in Selera Masuri)

Mat Corner is one of the best known nasi ambang stalls in JB. It has all the usual components of fried chicken, tempe, salted fish, fried vegetables and coconut shreds. However, it does not have that signature clump of fried noodles of nasi ambang. The fried chicken also tend to be a bit dry and stiff.

The spicy splash of curry gravy and sambal chili are Mat Corner's main selling points. The sambal chili has a sharp sting and distinct lemon grass aroma. The curry gravy is spicy, sweet and nutty.

Address: Off Jalan Padi Mahsuri (opposite SMK Bandar Baru Uda), Bandar Baru Uda

There you have it; these are just some of the best street nasi ambang in Johor Bahru.
Please give me tips to help me add to and improve this list of nasi ambang in JB ;-D

Nasi Ambang in Johor Bahru JB Taman Setia Indah by Zai Catering
Today, we drove around the Taman Setia Indah area and stumbled upon Zai Catering stall just beside the MasLee wet market.

Zai Catering is a small stall shaded by umbrellas facing Jalan Setia 3/7; it was right under the large Pasaraya MasLee sign.

When we saw that Zai Catering was serving nasi ambang, we immediately decided to give it a try.

As Zai Catering serves only takeaways, we took our packets of food to the food court just behind Zai Catering stall. The food court was very comfortable and we can get our drinks as well as additional food here.

My breakfast in traditional banana leaf wrap.
Just a packet of nasi ambang and a glass of hot frothy milk tea (teh tarik). Total RM5 (SGD1.90) for everything together. Humble but satisfying brekky that makes me blissfully happy.
Michelin Stars not required for a great meal ;-D

Nasi Ambang with chicken rendang RM4 (SGD1.50).

Nasi Ambang with beef rendang RM4 (SGD1.50).

The nasi ambang were served with a handful of stir fried mixed vegetables which were fresh and crunchy.

There was also a clump of stir fried savoury sweet noodles and bean sprouts. There was a bit of serundeng (fried shredded coconut) buried under the noodles.

Each packet of nasi ambang comes with a couple of this small salted fish. The salted fish was quite hard and very salty.

The sambal chili at Zai Catering was a blend of sweet, savoury and spicy. The sambal chili was quite sweet and only mildly spicy.

Mid way through our meal, I popped back to the stall to ask for a little bit more sambal chili. The cheerful lady scooped us a small bagful of sambal chili.
Such is the generosity of everyday folks which I encountered frequently in JB.
I liked both the beef rendang and chicken rendang versions of nasi ambang, but my favourite was the chicken rendang.

The rendang beef diced into small cubes was well infused with aromatic herbs and spices. The meat was tender but slightly fibrous.

The chicken was cooked just right, so the meat was tender and juicy. The chicken was blanketed with a rich and creamy curry gravy which was mildly spicy with the pleasant taste of herbs and spices. The flavour of the creamy coconut milk was strong.
I love this.

After our enjoyable meal, we spoke a while with the friendly stall holders.

Pak Mus was busy cooking sambal chili at the stall.
Pak Mus runs the stall with wife Mak Zai and their daughters.
The family is at the stall at 2:00am and is ready at 5:00am to serve packets of nasi ambeng and nasi lemak to the workers who work in Singapore. The hardworking workers commute daily between JB and Singapore. The workers swing by at Mak Zai's stall on their bikes and pick up their packets of breakfast and lunch on the way to Singapore.
If you want to try nasi ambang, you can get it at Zai Catering. Next time, I will remember to ask for a big splash of gravy with the chicken rendang as I love the gravy's creaminess, aromas and flavours.

Nasi Ambang Mak Ana in Johor Bahru Bandar Baru Uda
I had long wanted to taste Mak Ana's nasi ambang which had been the rage on Johor Sedap Facebook Group. Finally made the trip today with makan buddy Kumes who is a big Mak Ana fan.

Nasi Ambang Mak Ana is a makeshift road side stall with canvas roofing and flappy walls, operating off the back of a mini van. The neat and well kept stall has only limited seating and most of Mak Ana's clientele are take-away customers.

A simple sign at Mak Ana's warung (road side stall) carried a clear warning "Berapi Punya" (hot like a volcano). This is a hot volcano people run to, not away from. Hurry because Mak Ana's busy stall opens less than 3 hours a day before her nasi ambang is sold out.

The friendly and cheerful Mak Ana is personally at the stall.

The food are all in large aluminium pots or kept warm in large plastic cooler boxes and tubs. This is the pot of fiery curry chicken. They don't last long - everything at Mak Ana is usually sold out by 1:30pm.

Mak Ana's nasi ambang is very popular with residents, office and factory workers around the Bandar Baru Uda area (in Johor Bahru).

Many would take away the nasi ambeng wrapped with banana leaf and brown paper in a traditional cone shaped bundle. Each standard pack costs RM5.

I had a standard set at RM5.
There was a large mound of white steamed rice topped with spicy fried noodles (mee goreng), a curry chicken drumstick, deep fried beef liver, curry beef, tofu cubes, some long beans, a couple of small salt fish, a potato cutlet, a clump ofkerisik serundeng (fried shredded coconut), a dash of sambal chili and splash of chicken curry.

Everything in the packet came together in a perfect jumble.
Many textures from tender yet nutty rice, tender noodles, soft chicken, soft potato cutlet, crunchy long beans, and slightly leathery salted fish.
There were lots of flavours including sweetness from the potato and chicken, savouriness from the fried beef liver, saltiness from the salt fished and layers of spicy hot from the sambal and curry gravy.
The sambal chili was made with different types of chili peppers and chili padi giving the spiciness interesting layers of hotness. It was hot like a volcano as advertised but not overpowering or overwhelming (for me). It left a nice spicy sting on the tongue that lingers briefly. Just long enough for me to reach for another delicious mouthful as soon as I swallowed the previous one.

Mak Ana is very generous with her delicious curry gravy with a nice fresh coconut milk flavour. I went over to ask for more curry and the boss cheerfully gave me two more scoops, all the while asking if it was enough.
The curry gravy and the sambal chili are definitely the main selling points of Mak Ana's nasi ambang. The generous portion of well prepared components from the steamed rice to the spicy fried noodles and everything else in the package, made this humble warung an excellent place to stop over, eat like a local, and experience a street side warung.
This is one of the best nasi ambang there is in Johor Bahru.
Mak Ana's warung is located just beside the Petronas petrol station along Jalan Padi Ria. Parking is easy around the stall and the seating, though limited is quite comfortable.
->> This nasi ambang is spicy and shiok!

Nasi Ambang at Johor Bahru Sri Tebrau Market A B Rahmat Stall
✍️ 15 Jan 2026. Came back to Sri Tebrau Market to try the Wednesday nasi ambang at A B Rahmat stall.
Muar Food Trail by Tourism Malaysia Johor

This year's Tourism Malaysia Johor's food trail goes to the historic riverine town of Muar or Bandar Maharani. (Tourism Malaysia Johor has a popular food trail based in Johor Bahru.) Tourism Malaysia Johor invited me to participate in the launch of the Muar Food Trail from 23 to 26 June 2013.
Day 1
We gathered in Johor Bahru and proceeded to our first stop - Nasuha Herbs and Spices Paradise off Jalan Muar-Pagoh. Nasuha is a herbs plantation offering restaurants, spa, accommodations, plantation tours and outdoor activities.

The second food trail stop was Norseha Ikan Baker at Medan Sabak Awor where we had dinner. Dinner was a sumptuous spread of fresh seafood such as fish, crabs, mussels and squids cooked the traditional way by Puan Norseha and her cheerful team.

Our tummies filled, we then proceeded to the Tanjung Emas jetty to board the ferry for the interesting firefly tour along Sungai Muar.

After seeing the fireflies, it was nearly midnight and we had stomach space for supper! The famous Muar Soup House was our supper. Well past midnight and Muar Soup House was still a hive of activity, many people were tucking in their soup with a teh tarik.
Day 2

The first event on the second day was the official launch ceremony of the Muar Food Trail hosted by Majlis Perbandaran Muar at the Muar Traders Hotel.

We were then back again at the Tamjung Emas jetty but this time the ferry took us out to the mouth of Sungai Muar to meet up with the sampans fishing for oysters. This was fascinating! The fishermen dived for oysters without diving gear. They fished for wild oysters the same way as was done long, long ago.

After watching oyster fishing, we went back to downtown Muar for Mee Bandung, an iconic local dish. One of the best examples is at Kedai Mee Bandung Abu Bakar.
Dinner was BBQ fare at Mann Chalet at Kampung Seri Pantai.
Day 3
We started the day with a sumptuous and scrumptious breakfast at the popular R&H Cafe Sate Maharani.

R&H Cafe is famous for their sate (satay) which, uniquely in Muar, is eaten during breakfast.

Besides the delicious sate we had mee rebus Jawa, lontong, tauhu lentok, nasi ambeng, and nasi lemak just to name a few.

We then took a drive to the Kopi 434 plantation and factory. We were shown the coffee production process from harvesting the coffee berries, to husking, roasting and packing. We sampled Kopi 434's premium quality Elephant Brand Liberica coffee and also dropped by at their outlet at Jalan Maharani.

Next stop was the famous Asam Pedas Mak Pon at Parit Jawa. Very fresh fish cooked in mildly spicy asam pedas.

After lunch, we proceeded to Homestay Parit Bugis and visited various traditional cottage industries in the village such as Tempe, Cakar Ayam, Kuih Bahulu and Gula Melaka production.

We spent the night at Homestay Parit Bugis. We were treated to a traditional nasi ambeng dinner where all the guests enjoyed mixing and sharing the delicious food together. This is a great traditional bonding experience not to be missed. Reminds me of the Chinese lou hei (toss raw fish salad) during Chinese New Year.
After-dinner entertainment were the amazing Kuda Kepang and Barongan performances.

The dancers swaying rhythmically to the hypnotic beat.

I was thrilled by the Barongan dance but some in the audience found it rather "scary".
Day 4

The next morning we bid farewell to our gracious hosts while having a breakfast of traditional kuih (sweet cakes) and nasi lemak.
It was a very interesting 4 days getting to know Muar and especially it's people, culture and traditional foods.
Tourism Malaysia Johor's Muar Food Trail 2013 is a very well thought out food tour itinerary that tourists will find very
helpful.
