Updated 2018. Back at Sin Kee Ikan Bakar (spicy grilled fish) after 6 years. Chopped and double confirmed that quality and price are maintained and Sin Kee 新记海咪铁板烧鱼 remains one of my favourite ikan bakar stalls in Johor and Singapore.
Sin Kee is located in Cedar Point Food Centre in Taman Century. It is just beside Grand Paragon Hotel. Cedar Point is popular with locals as there are many hawker stalls here - some like Sin Kee are among JB's favourites.
The boss' son has taken over the stall operations and the boss is seldom at the stall nowadays (the lady told me).
I wanted to order my usual, which is stingray, squid and vegetables. The lady told me that they don't have squid for the day as they rejected the supplier as the stock wasn't fresh today. (Ah... I like such fastidious hawkers who insist on only the best for their customers.) No squid, no problem - we ordered la la clams instead.
The wing of stingray laid on banana leaf was smothered by a thick blanket of sambal and grilled on a flat black cast iron griddle. It was delivered to our table sizzling hot.
Gently lifting the flesh of the stingray released a puff of steam and revealed the white meat inside. It was so soft and juicy. The sambal chili was well balanced savoury spicy which complemented the stingray's natural sweetness. The mild sambal chili did not overwhelm the fish's delicate natural flavours. The sambal chili's mild spicy sting lingered a while pleasantly in the aftertaste.
La la clams grilled with sambal chili on banana leaf.
The la la clams were fresh and very clean - there was not even one grain of sand. The meat was the size of the nail on my pinkie. The sambal chili also complemented and didn't overpower the clam's slight natural flavours.
Our "Four Heavenly Kings" 四大天王 grilled vegetables which consists of fresh long beans, petai (stinky beans), lady fingers and kacang botol (square beans).
All the vegetables were crunchy and juicy. They were just done to rid the vegetables of green taste. Sin Kee's mild sambal chili went well with the vegetables too.
👍 One of my favourite ikan bakar stalls in Johor and Singapore. Their mild well balanced sambal chili works well with fish, squid, clams, and vegetables. The ingredients are fresh and skilfully cooked. The dishes were so delicious and they were not overly greasy. Service was cheerful and friendly. Prices were very reasonable. (We paid RM41 for all the food with 3 bowls of rice.)

If you want to venture further from the city centre, check out Sin Huat Ikan Bakar in Kampung Pandan (about 10 minutes slow drive without traffic from the city). It is in a kampung style food centre (smaller than Cedar Point but also has a good range of food to taste and has nice laid back rustic ambiance) 👈 click
The idea of WGOIJB Makan Blitz was to raid popular food centres in JB as a group and try out as many different stalls as possible together. After the makan spree, we will highlight our favourite stalls of the evening.
For the Makan Blitz on Cedar Point food centre near Hotel Grand Paragon, Sin Kee Ikan Bakar BBQ seafood stall 新记海咪铁板烧鱼 got the most Likes from our Eat Gang. This stall even got repeat orders from us as we stayed on to chill, and chatted the evening away.

I usually consider three key points when appreciating a BBQ seafood stall, namely, the freshness of the ingredients, the quality of the stall's sambal, and the chef's skill in cooking the seafood.
Sin Kee Ikan Bakar BBQ seafood stall impressed on all these three key criteria and so it was little wonder that it attracted the most votes during our Makan Blitz.
Everything at this stall was fresh - the boss was showing off his fresh sotong (squid) with full confidence.
This photo was taken in difficult dim light and yet we can still see the bright eyes of the fish and sotong (squid).
The sambal was not too spicy hot and was savoury. It was also not too greasy, which is a common shortcoming of average BBQ seafood stalls.
The chef handling the cooking was skilful and did a good job of cooking the seafood just right, with a bit of smokiness while retaining its natural juiciness.
The accompanying vegetables like petai (irresistible stinky beans) and lady fingers were also done very well. The texture was crisp and crunchy. Again, it was not overly greasy.
All in, this BBQ seafood was delicious as the stingray and sotong (squid) flesh were tender and juicy while its taste was a blend of natural sweetness, spiced up with aromatic, savoury sambal.
Some of our Eat Gang declared that this is their favourite BBQ seafood stall in JB.
👉 Fresh seafood, great sambal chili and good grilling skills make Sin Kee Ikan Bakar a Must Try for BBQ seafood lovers.

Yum! Looks spicy but I love spicy and BBQ! :)
ReplyDeletehaha it's nice!
DeleteBeen frequenting his stall for ages.I have to admit its one of the better ikan bakar places anywhere.Unfortunately, there is a sad story about the loss of his wife about 7 years ago and it was mainly because of that I started to visit his stall if not for the food. After having tried his ikan bakar I'm convinced its better than most places.
ReplyDeleteYes, the ikan bakar is one of the best. Nice people at the stall too.
DeleteOMG....I was just telling my gf 2 days ago about this place and now its on Johor Kaki!I have been frequenting this ikan bakar stall for many years.Definitely the best I have had so far.By the way,I was one of the physicians responsible for treating his wife 7 years ago.It is indeed a sad story.I had no idea who the owner was until he came upto me and introduced himself when I went to Cedar Point a few years after his wife passed on.I didn't recognize him but he recognized me immediately.Nice people and nice ambience.Parking is plenty and good for watching weekend EPL matches on large screen projector.
ReplyDeleteThanks Doc for the background story. Behind every person is their own story and struggles. It helps all of us if everyone has empathy for others and support each other as we walk this path together.
DeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteDo you know if it's halal? Or Pork-free?
