Roast Duck at Hong Kong Boy Food Street in Johor Jaya 好味药材烧鸭
Sunroast Roast Chicken Char Siew in Yong Peng Johor 宏达烧腊
Little Yong Peng town is the perfect pit stop for the three hour plus drive between KL and JB. Yong Peng town is about mid point between KL and JB, and the main street is located just off the North-South Expressway - there is no need to drive another 30-45 minutes to town (as is the case with Kluang, Segamat, Batu Pahat or Muar).
Herbal Roast Duck Restoran Lapan Dua Dua 822 超级鸭王 Johor Bahru ⭐⭐⭐⭐
A fellow foodie shared on Facebook about Restoran Lapan Dua Dua 822 超级鸭王's 23rd Anniversary buy 1 get 1/2 free herbal roast duck promotion. As I am a fan of Lapan Dua Dua's herbal roast ducks, I quickly made my way to their shop in Taman Ungku Tun Aminah, Johor Bahru.
We ordered 1 duck for RM58 and got another 1/2 duck free.

We ate the 1/2 duck at the shop and took away 1 duck.

Even a 1/2 duck has enough meat to feed 3 people very comfortably.

Not the juiciest flesh nor the crispiest skin but Lapan Dua Dua's signature herbal flavour and aroma is still alluring. I like the savouriness and dang gui 當歸 flavour in Lapan Dua Dua 882's roast ducks. We finished the 1/2 duck happily and enjoyed it very much.

The roast duck promotion was selling like hot cakes.
Here is my previous post on Restoran Lapan Dua Dua 822 超级鸭王.

The buy 1 get 1/2 free promotion is on till 31 May 2015.
Disclosure: I paid for my ducks and have no affiliation at all with Restoran Lapan Dua Dua. Am just sharing a delicious good deal with you 😄

Closed: Hong Kong Roast Meat at Tong Tong Hong Kong Delicacy 糖糖美食方 (Formerly Tong Tong Cross Way Bay in Johor Bahru, Taman Sri Tebrau 糖糖尖沙咀港式烧臘)

Johor Bahru recently has a new Hong Kong roast meat shop called Tong Tong Cross Way Bay 糖糖尖沙咀港式烧臘.

The chef owner Martin invited me to visit his newly opened shop in Taman Sri Tebrau and to try his popular roast meats.

Martin used to run his small roast meat stall in a Singapore coffee shop. Martin made his name there with his ultra crispy skin siew yok 烧肉 (roast belly pork), even earning praises from KF Seetoh, Singapore's famous food guru.
Martin recently moved to Johor Bahru.
Speaking with Martin, I gathered that the keys to Tong Tong Cross Way Bay's signature roasts are in the techniques which Martin personally developed and also the quality of the ingredients.

The marinated ducks are blown dry before roasting. Tong Tong Cross Way Bay uses only chilled ducks of at least 3 kg size for their roast ducks.
Martin said that chilled large ducks are the meatiest, juiciest and more flavourful.
Local chilled pork is used for Cross Way Bay's siew yoke and char siew 叉烧.

Inside Tong Tong Cross Way Bay roast meat shop, the decor is still bare bones at the moment. Martin intends to renovate his shop in stages. His priority now is to make his roast meats known in the local market.
Already, Martin's ultra crispy siew yoke and other roast meats are winning him a growing regular clientele in JB.

Our tasting plate of char siew and siew yok.

The signature of Tong Tong Cross Way Bay's siew yok 烧肉 is their golden ultra crispy skin.
At it's best, the thick savoury skin is crispy like an airy brittle rice cracker with just the right (slight) greasiness. In the mouth, the crispy skin crumbles and tastes like a light buttery cookie.
The attached fat and lean meat are moist and tender.

For the char siew, I liked the thin translucent pieces with juicy tender fat and meat.

Tong Tong Cross Way Bay's roast chicken.

The golden brown crispy skin popped off the thick chunk of tender moist chicken meat.
Besides roast meats, Tong Tong Cross Way Bay also serves braised pork trotters but we just had no more stomach space to try it.
The roast ducks were also sold out today, so we didn't get to taste that either.
Shall be back for these :D
The best time to be at Tong Tong Cross Way Bay is when the shop opens at 10:00am and the roast meats are hot, just out of the roaster.
Tong Tong Cross Way Bay's ultra crispy skin siew yok 烧肉 is a Must Try.

Weng Kee Roast Duck Restaurant 荣记烧腊 in Taman Century, Johor Bahru

I've noticed Weng Kee Roast Duck Restaurant 荣记烧腊 or 阿荣 in Taman Century for some time. It's always got a good crowd whenever I passed.

Weng Kee occupies two shoplots just across the road from KSL Mall. Weng Kee is an old name 老字号 in JB with over 30+ years' of history.

I took a while to admire these roast ducks hanging in the glass case. Duck is one of my favourite meats because it has it's own distinctive flavour and has a good blend of meat and fats.

Weng Kee also sells roast chicken which looked succulent and judging by it's crisp, golden brown skin appeared pretty well roasted too.

There were also large slabs of siew yok 烧肉 (roast belly pork) and long chains of char siew 叉烧 (roast pork).

Business was brisk and the boss with a helper were busy cutting up roast ducks and other roast meats.

As I was food hunting alone today, I asked for just a drumstick and a plate of rice. The set came to RM8.20.

The skin was thin and crispy. The flesh was juicy, tender, savoury and slightly salty. The slight gaminess of duck was barely detectable but it was there. I like it a lot.

The set came with a small bowl of brown sauce. I like to pour the whole small bowl of sauce over my rice. The brown sauce was sweet and savoury - perfect for flavouring the plain white rice.

I was fascinated by this sticky plum sauce which is tangy, sweet, and salty. The lady boss told me that this plum sauce is house made. Love it x 10.
The chili sauce with ginger and garlic was good too.

Roast Duck @ Sin Keong Kee in Kulai, Johor
Sin Keong Kee's roast duck and meats have a loyal following who feels strongly that it is the best in Kulai, and some even say, the best they've tasted anywhere.
I was at Sin Keong Kee well passed lunch time, and yet there was a steady stream of customers, young and old, coming and going.
Just look at Sin Keong Kee's famous siew yoke 烧肉 (roast belly meat) and char siew 叉烧 (roast pork). Make your mouth water, don't they?
I observed that the meats and duck were carefully cut to ensure the customers get only the good cuts. The duck was meticulously deboned, and mine even had soft crunchy cartilage attached, which I like J
This set of rice with a generous portion of boneless roast duck and soup was RM5.
The roast duck meat was juicy, naturally sweet and has a pleasant subtle herbal taste. The meat was tender and has a nice smoky flavour and feel. It was delicious.
This time around, I only had room in my stomach for the roast duck. I must come back to Sin Keong Kee's, and must not miss their siew yoke and char siew, next time J
