Black gooey KL style Hokkien mee has a strong following in JB and Singapore, but good ones are rather rare here. So, whenever a KL Hokkien mee stall appears, social media will be abuzz with feedback on the noodles. The new KL Hokkien mee stall at Hoa Kee coffee shop in Taman Gaya, Ulu Tiram has been getting good response from JB foodies.
As a big fan of Kim Lian Kee KL Hokkien mee, I was excited that they opened a branch in the newly launched Mid Valley Southkey in Johor Bahru. I am eager to know if I still need to go to Kuala Lumpur to get my KL Hokkien mee fix.
The black gooey lardy fat Hokkien mee known as tai lok meen in Cantonese (which is still the lingua franca of KL Chinese) is one of Kuala Lumpur's signature dishes. Every neighbourhood in KL and Petaling Jaya has at least one or two famous Hokkien mee stalls.
One evening in Kuala Lumpur, we were craving KL style Hokkien mee - actually, we crave KL Hokkien mee everyday we are here 😂 But, we were deterred by the legendary KL rush hour traffic and dared not drive downtown to Kim Lian Kee (Petaling Street) or Mun Wah (Jalan Maharajalela) for our long time favourites.
I remember Ah Wah Hokkien noodles at Paramount Garden in Petaling Jaya because we often browsed the pasar malam here over a decade ago. I was awed by the dramatic daily fireworks display at Ah Wah - though in KL, few locals even bat an eyelid as this type of fiery fury is by no means uncommon :-D Nevertheless, Ah Wah is top-of-the-mind of many KLites when it comes to KL Hokkien mee.
For decades since my first visit to KL in the 1970s, whenever I am in Kuala Lumpur, I will look for an opportunity to taste KL style Hokkien mee. So far, my favourite is still Kim Lian Kee at Petaling Street, KL's Chinatown.
每当我到吉隆坡,我不会错过品尝福建面的机会,因为它是如此美味,最好的也只能在吉隆坡可以找到。我最喜欢的摊位是在创建这个菜的金连记。金连记坐落在吉隆坡的唐人街。
We finally went for dinner at Uncle Pou Wok's parent shop at Permas Jaya in JB. We had been wanting to come here since having a good lunch at Pou Wok Lou's Mount Austin branch 4 years ago.
