Review of T & K Seafood ● Green Shirt Crazy Popular Enigma of Yaowarat Bangkok

The crowd at T & K Seafood in Bangkok's Chinatown scares me - I am not kidding. I've been here at least three, if not four times, and the experience is always the same. The crowd is crazy, the food is not particularly memorable not bad, the price isn't really cheap, staff are friendly (they try their best) but service is hurried because of the crush, yet somehow we kept going back if we are in Yaowarat during dinner time. I don't really get it 🤔 😬

Missed meeting buddies John and Joanne for nearly three years, no thanks to the Covid pandemic. So, we were glad to catch up in Bangkok. John and Joanne were extremely warm and hospitable, bringing us to many interesting places despite their busy schedule. One of the memorable places was this humble street side coffee stall where parked motorcycles double up as tables for the stall. I have never seen anything like this before 😁

Nai Ek Roll Noodles • Michelin Kway Chap📍Yaowarat Bangkok Chinatown 陳億粿條

Nai Ek Roll Noodles. Michelin Plate Kway Chap in Yaowarat Bangkok Chinatown 陳億粿條

There are at least two famous kway chap (rice roll noodle) shops in Yaowarat (Bangkok's Chinatown) both on the same main street. There's Kuey Chap Aun Pochana and Nai Ek Roll Noodles. I blogged about Kuey Chap Aun Pochana in 2015 because it left a deeper impression (it later won the Michelin Bib Gourmand award). Nai Ek Roll Noodles on the other hand is no sloth either, it won the Michelin Plate (which is like an honourable mention). In Michelin speak, awards go from Star ⭐ through Bib Gourmand 👶 to Plate 🍽 in descending order.

(Disclaimer: I don't refer to Michelin guides for my food adventures. I don't mind that my food trips are sometimes misadventures as hit or miss, I feel it is all part of the fun.)

While combing Yaowarat street for good food, this scene caught our attention. When people congregate like this around a stall, it's usually a sign of good food ;-p

We braved the Yaowarat street traffic and crossed the road over to the stall. It's a simple street side stall selling toast bread and buns.

The toast bread stall is just across the road from the famous T & K Seafood Restaurant and in front of the pink signboard of the Government Savings Bank.

The toast bread and buns are freshly grilled over charcoal.

Ordering is easy. There are butter-sugar, butter-condensed milk, butter-egg fillings with chocolate, condensed milk and even sweet chilli toppings. Just write down the type of bun, fillings and toppings that you want at the front of the stall and hand over the slip of paper to the staff.

Then, stand back into the milling crowd and wait for your queue number to be called. Waiting time is about 10-15 minutes.

Seth (of Sethlui.com) bought a box of two of these buns for BT18 (SGD 0.70) to try. I wasn't too eager when Seth bought the buns as we were already very full with more food to taste, so why squander precious stomach space on bread?

Right?

Wrong.

The bun with chocolate topping and butter-sugar filling had the usual sweetness. But, what struck me was the bun's very delightful crispy soft chewy type of mouthfeel which is new to me. It's a lovely snack. I rarely never used the word amazing but this bun is.

Thanks Seth! For one of the best food finds of this Bangkok trip.

If you are in Yaowarat, give this unique toast bread and bun a try.

It's funny that in the land of amazing and exquisite Thai cuisine, I have to say that this simple toast bread is a Must Try in Bangkok.
