The Toast @ Mount Austin JB. A Contemporary Kopitiam (Coffee Shop)

The Toast coffee shop really needs no introduction for Johor Bahru folks - it is a very popular place for traditional Nanyang coffee, toasts, eggs, and the full range of local favourites like mee siam, nasi lemak, etc. I've been to The Toast's outlets in Johor Jaya and Permas Jaya, but was first time here at the Mount Austin branch. (They have one more outlet in Taman Ungku Tun Aminah.) Our experience at Mount Austin was good, as expected of The Toast.
Sun Kopitiam in Ulu Tiram, Johor 东升

Most locals in Ulu Tiram (north of Johor Bahru) are familiar with Sun Kopitiam 东升 which has been here for over 30 years.

The local townsfolk like to gather here to catch up over breakfast as they have always done, all these years.
For people driving from Singapore or Johor Bahru to Desaru, Mersing, or Kuantan, Sun Kopitiam is a convenient breakfast stop. I was last here with the Militia Riders Motorcycle Club during our food trail to Kluang.
The present owner, Mr Foo is the third generation. Mr Foo's aunt runs Sunshine kopitiam in nearby Taman Puteri Wangsa selling the same signatures.
Sun Kopitiam's signature nasi lemak.
Very simple - just rice cooked with coconut milk, slices of cucumber and a few fried peanuts, a fried egg and a dollop of sambal. Regulars have been enjoying this for years.

This sambal chili stood out in the otherwise quite ordinary nasi lemak. The sambal was a good blend of sweet, savoury and mildly spicy with a pronounced anchovy flavour.

Sun kopitiam's butter and homemade kaya toast. Well executed.

Sun kopitiam's signature sambal toast.

It was simply a sandwich of toasted white bread with fried egg and sambal chili spread.
Sun kopitiam enjoys a huge following for this sambal toast.

I love runny soft boiled eggs for breakfast :D

Sun coffee shop's half boiled eggs were perfectly done.

Bitter local coffee given body, aroma and sweetness by large dollops of milky sweetener.

Coffee served here is the "Television brand" old school Nanyang blend of Robusta beans roasted with corn, sugar, margarine and other add ons.

The Sun kopitiam signboard is partially hidden by the large clump of leafy bamboo on the left.
For people driving from Singapore or Johor Bahru heading north to Mersing, Desaru or Kuantan, Sun Kopitiam is a convenient and pleasant breakfast stop.
东升 coffee shop founder Mr Foo's wife cooks just one small pot of bak kut teh on Sunday and it is usually sold out by 10am. If you like to try home cooked Ah Mah BKT with your coffee, come early on Sunday. It tastes nice and the experience is special 👈 click

Johor Nasi Lemak at 七里香 Stall at Happy Land Cafe in Kulai

Just a couple of days after trying the fried chicken at Happy Land Café, I decided that I have to come back to Kulai with bloggie buddies to blog about this little nasi lemak 七里香 stall outside Happy Land Café 欢乐园饮冰室.

Address: 1-38 Jalan Pinang, Taman Kota Kulai, Kulai
Map: http://goo.gl/maps/pNvVO
GPS: 1.668227,103.578801
Hours: 11:00am to 4:30pm
No pork, no lard, no Halal cert

A simple plate of nasi lemak with ordinary ingredients. No fancy add ons but everything was in place and done well, making for a basic nasi lemak which all four of us agreed was outstanding.
The rice was a mound of gentle coconut milk perfume. The rice grains were the right texture, loose yet each grain was of the right tenderness.
The fried chicken had a surprising texture, a balance of tenderness and firmness with slight moistness still in the fibres. The chicken's subtle natural flavour was still present, while complemented by the marinade's more robust savoury flavour clinging onto the golden crispy skin.
The sambal was sweet from fresh unions bits with a mild spicy sting that lingers briefly.
The nicely done fried egg was almost grease free.

We were on a day long food hunt in Kulai with an ambitious itinerary of many more food stops ahead, so we were ultra cautious about not wasting limited stomach space. But, 千里香 stall's crispy fried chicken was so good, we couldn't resist ordering this drumstick to savour it's seductive aroma and flavour one more time before setting off for the next stop on our Kulai "Eat List".
The Wong sisters run this humble corner stall, quietly plying their trade for the past 10 years. They seemed a little reserved and unaccustomed to unannounced visits and attention from pesky strangers with clunky DSLRs pointing at them clicking away. They must be wondering what the fuss was all about.

The Wong sisters at work. She would only let me take pictures of her hands :P

七里香 stall was doing a brisk business of takeaways.

The Wong sisters make their own sambal chili from scratch at the stall using red onions, chili peppers, garlic and spices.

Order a plate or two of this nasi lemak when you are at Happy Land, I am confident that you won't be wasting any calories :D

Nasi Lemak Kak Zai (Low Piak) Batu Pahat, Johor

This delicious nasi lemak with teh tarik all for a grand total of RM6.80.
I have to thank reader Hippototomos Miaw who suggested that I should try her favourite nasi lemak stall in Taman Nira, better known as Low Piak to locals in Batu Pahat. There are several warungs around here at Low Piak where many gather for their meals.

32 Melaka Nasi Lemak at 777 Food Centre in Taman Ungku Tun Aminah, Johor Bahru

32 Melaka Nasi Lemak stall at 777 Food Centre in Taman Ungku Tun Aminah always has a queue of customers waiting in line to buy their famous nasi lemak (or, is it their fried chicken?).
32 Melaka Nasi Lemak sells various accompanying side dishes with their nasi lemak such as their popular rendang chicken, but their main draw is their fried chicken.

There is something about the chicken, the batter and the way the boss, MR Goh fries his chicken. The huge chunks of chicken were so delicious. The batter was thin yet it was just nicely crispy, and the chicken flesh was still moist and juicy. Not as moist and juicy as boiled or steamed chicken, of course, but it did remind me of them. Interestingly, the chicken was not greasy or oily, even though this was fried chicken.

I couldn't resist indulging in these fried chicken claws. Crunchy and crispy fun at RM1 for 5 pieces :P There are also fried necks and bishop's noses for those who are so inclined :P
32 Melaka Nasi Lemak stall takes extra effort to ensure the crispiness of their fried chicken. The fried chicken are displayed in a glass cabinet with sliding glass doors to prevent exposure to draft and chill. Even though there is always a queue and business is brisk, the staff will slide open the cabinet glass door, pick out the pieces of chicken ordered and then closes it after that. So, the chicken is always served hot, crispy outside and tender and moist inside.
I was so absorbed by the fried chicken that I didn't pay too much attention to the rice. Just recalled that it's cooked with turmeric and pandan leaves and it's flavours were slight and the grains were separate and discrete with just the right texture.
The sambal looked ordinary but it was nice as it had that anchovy aroma and savouriness which I liked.
Be sure to include 32 Melaka Nasi Lemak's fried chicken when you are having dinner at 777 Food Centre. As for me, I would also like to try their rendang chicken, next time.

Nasi Lemak & Soto at Warung Kurniawan in Taman Suria, Johor Bahru, Malaysia
^ Click on photo to view latest post ^
Throughout Malaysia we can find warungs or street side food stalls which are popular places for a tasty and affordable meal with family and friends.
My friend Joe brought me to the famous Warung Kurniawan in Taman Suria.
Warung Kurniawan was typical of the thousands of warungs across Malaysia.
Warung Kurniawan is well known for its nasi lemak, sup tulang and its soto which can be eaten with bee hoon (rice vermicelli), yellow noodles, or rice cakes.
The soto soup at Warung Kurniawan was clear, not oily and mildly flavoured.
The generic yellow noodles were also somewhat bland.
Add a dash of their spicy sambal and the soup and noodles were instantly energized and perked up. As my friend said, the secret of Warung Kurniawan's soto is in their sambal. So, the flavour of Warung Kurniawan's soto is basically mild, and customers can adjust the spiciness to their liking by just adding their special spicy sambal. I also liked the crispy shallot crackles generously sprinkled on top of the noodles.
Warung Kurniawan's popular nasi lemak come tightly wrapped in these banana leaf and brown paper wraps.
For RM1.50, we get a fistful of fragrant coconut flavoured rice and sambal, slice of cucumber, half an egg, and a couple of small salted fish to go with it.
My friends and I liked this nasi lemak very much. This small package was packed full of delicious kampung flavours.
Come again? Yes! I want to try those enticing sup kambing and sup tulang!
