What to Eat in Johor Jaya. Fish Ball Soup at Fong Yem Kopitiam

Two days ago, I blogged about Fong Yan chicken rice at Fong Yem coffee shop in Johor Jaya. Now, I want to share with you the fish ball soup and noodle stall in the same kopitiam. To me good chicken rice and great fish ball soup make the best food pairing 😄

Best Singapore Char Siew Noodles List @ Fatty Ox in Chinatown Food Centre ⭐⭐⭐⭐

So I was doing my thing, roaming around Singapore's Chinatown food centre, taking pictures here and there as I went. Exchanged Chinese New Year greetings with Fatty Ox boss Mr Cheung and he offered me a piece of his char siew. "Freshly roasted, try, still hot, be careful" the friendly stall boss said as he cut me a sampling joint 😄

Fong Yem Boneless Hainanese Chicken Rice in Johor Bahru. Love their Roast Chicken 丰源美食中心 ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I am not a fan of "roast" chicken even though chicken rice bosses told me that "roast" sells better than old fashioned poached nowadays. "Roast" though looks very appetising often turned out dry and flat tasting. But, not at the chicken rice stall at Fong Yem coffee shop 丰源美食中心 in Johor Jaya -  it's my favourite "roast" chicken stall now.

Durian Cendol at Nyonya Sister in Paradigm Mall Johor Bahru

I have been looking for a good durian cendol in JB after my favourite stall in Johor Jaya closed. I think I finally found a good one at Nyonya Sister in Paradigm Mall.

在新山 Paradigm Mall 的 Nyonya Sister 那里有猫山王榴莲 cendol. 8块钱有猫山王榴莲. 又香又甜, 我喜欢. 10块钱的榴莲 cendol 还有一粒泰国香椰做的冰淇淋. 更甜更香, 我更喜欢. 喜欢吃甜, 吃猫山王的朋友可以试试哦. Shopping 来这里歇歇脚也不错. 在 Paradigm Mall 底层 Village Grocer 对面 Subway 旁边 (GF Lot 37A).

Ho Meng Kee Wanton Mee at Queen Park Coffee Shop in Perling JB 何明记云吞面

Ho Meng Kee, founded in the 1930s, is one of the stalwarts of Johor Bahru wanton mee. Today, Ho Meng Kee is a leading wanton mee manufacturer and wholesaler, supplying many wanton noodle stalls in JB. There seemed to be at least one Ho Meng Kee WTM stall in every Taman (residential district) in JB.

While out on my daily walk this morning, thoughts about Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School came into my mind. Most of us would have heard, read or saw the news about the latest mass shooting in the USA (on 14 Feb 2018 - Valentine Day). Over here in Singapore / Johor, most people view it with detachment as USA is a far away land. Maybe, the mass shootings bothered me a bit more because I have family over there.

After eating lots of famous Penang food, we had plenty of calories to burn. Best Vegetarian Restaurants in Singapore. Miao Yi in People's Park Centre 妙益素食楼

We met for lunch today at Miao Yi 妙益, one of the longest established and famous vegetarian restaurants in Singapore. Founded in 1991, the founder still heads the kitchen, ensuring the standards which Miao Yi is famous for, stay the same. This was my first time at Miao Yi and I love it.

Man Man Unagi (Japanese Grilled Eel) in Singapore

Most Singapore foodies would have heard of Man Man Unagi and many would have tried it before. Opened in 2015, Man Man was among Michelin's Singapore Bib Gourmand winners of 2017. Deterred by the long queues which hasn't abated since it opened, I tried Man Man for the first time only yesterday, together with three buddies who are big fans of Man Man.

Yesterday, we tasted MAD about SUCRE's Chinese New Year pop shop dishes. MAD about SUCRE is a quaint little restaurant in Singapore's Chinatown which I recommend to friends for their quirky interpretations of French fare and fine pastries. For this Chinese New Year, from 6 Feb till 5 Mar, MAD returns briefly to their Chinese roots with their CNY pop shop.

If you are in Singapore now, you will see many queues around the island - people lining up to buy bak kwa 肉干 for Chinese New Year. Eating bak kwa is a Chinese New Year custom in Singapore. Queueing for hours to buy bak kwa is also a CNY custom here 😄 Buddy brought me to Bee Chun Heng (Lau Po) 美珍香(老鋪) at 89, Frankel Avenue.

Soon Lee Fish Porridge & Seafood Soup stall has been operating under the social media radar - I am not sure why. Perhaps, it's because it's relatively inaccessible by public transport and is located in an industrial park. "Cheap and good" Soon Lee is a well kept secret among taxi drivers and factory workers in Defu Industrial Estate.

Ah Hong Char Kway Teow @ Cheng Heng Coffee Shop in Seri Austin JB 啊康炒果条

I am always on the look out for good char kway teow like many Malaysians and Singaporeans. Ah Hong's char kway teow in Taman Seri Austin didn't really bowled me over but I know many people like this style of CKT so I am sharing it here.

Food near JB Customs. Gogirou BBQ Meat Street in Zenith Mall 新山韩式烤肉街

Dinner this evening at Gogirou BBQ Meat Street, Johor Bahru's newest Korean BBQ hangout. JB already has many Korean BBQ places but Gogirou is one of the most accessible for visitors from Singapore as it is located in Zenith Mall which is right across Jalan Wong Ah Fook from JBCC and City Square mall. It's about 10 minutes walking distance after clearing JB immigration.

Ah Chuan in JB is One of my Favourite Fish Soup Stalls 阿全鱼湯⭐⭐⭐⭐

If you have been following my blog, you will know that I am a big fan of simple fish soups. I find a good bowl of fish soup with a bowl of plain white rice very satisfying and comforting. One of my favourites is Ah Chuan in Johor Bahru - it is just a small stall in Starfood coffee shop in Taman Pelangi where the (Monday and Thursday) morning market is located (so parking can be challenging on those days).

Restoran ZZ. Original Mee Rebus Tulang Gearbox with Lamb Shank in JB

After tasting it in 2011, I used to take friends to Restoran ZZ at Jalan Petrie regularly for the mee rebus tulang gearbox which is a unique JB style of mee rebus. I also like the rustic kampung ambiance here. But, I stopped a few years later as the place sometimes wasn't well kept.

Taiping Sepetang Roti Prata. One of JB Best Roti Canai

I eat roti prata (known as roti canai in Malaysia) often as roti prata stalls are everywhere in Singapore and Malaysia. I rarely return to any particular stall as most roti prata stalls are good enough and few really stand out from the rest. But, the roti parta stall at Taiping Sepetang coffee shop in Taman Ungku Tun Aminah is one which I would return to when I am in the area.
