You know... sometimes I get bored with Nanyang kopi and toast breakfasts. Other times I am bored with the ubiquitous cookie cutter Arabica coffee and cake cafés. So, I am glad buddies brought me to 13 Units, a Hong Kong cha chaan teng style cafe.

Sohai Fried Kway Teow @ Pah Li Ban Skudai • 八里半 Sohai 炒饭 • 炒果条
Saw and smelled the aromatic white plumes from the corner fried kway teow stall at Pah Li Ban a few times. But, there are many choices here at PLB. As I worked my way through the stalls, eating their food one by one, I finally got to taste Sohai fried kway teow only today.
Sohai fried kway teow was good 👍 Can come again.
Don't let the wacky name distract you from the food. ("Sohai" is a rude word meaning a dimwit in Malaysia 😂 )

Restoran Pekin Sutera Johor Bahru 五福北京城 • Long Term Review
You know, I get requests to recommend restaurants for parties all the time. I can tell you, it is a lot of pressure and a heavy responsibility.
I mean, what if the restaurant didn't turn out as well as expected? You know... taste is subjective, people have different ideas of what is good value, and sometimes, even the best restaurants can have a bad day. So many things can go wrong 😅

Taiwanese Beef Noodles & Braised Pork Rice @ Taiphoon Formosa Cuisine. Sutera JB

Anyone who has been to Taiwan knows that braised pork rice (lu rou fan 滷肉饭) and beef noodles (niu rou mian 牛肉麵) are found everywhere on the island. They're staple and comfort food like chicken rice in Singapore and nasi lemak in Malaysia.
Quite a few people told me that they must have lu rou fan every day when they visit Taiwan. Funny thing is, for all the times that I have been to Taiwan, I have never tasted their lu rou fan and niu rou mian before - always enticed away to try the more trendy stuff 😂
Naughty Nuri's Warung Sutera Johor Bahru JB

We had lunch today at the Naughty Nuri's outlet near Sutera Mall. Naughty Nuri's Warung is an international franchise founded at the legendary beach side BBQ pork ribs and martini stall in Ubud, Bali. How did Balinese style ribs come together with martini in a warung? It's a husband and wife team - Ibu Nuri is the lady behind the naughty ribs and her American husband Brian, the wicked martinis. It's a perfect match 😄

Grazia Cafe in Johor Bahru, Taman Sutera Utama

Grazia Cafe is a quaint little eatery tucked in a corner of Taman Sutera Utama near Sutera Mall.

Every nook and corner of Grazia Cafe bears the imprint of Kellie, the youthful owner.

Kellie wanted to a create a relaxing, unpretentious space for her customers where everyone would feel at home.
The furnishings in Grazia Cafe are eclectic, a mishmash of odds and ends. This is partly because Kellie is a lady of many interests and also because many of the items in Grazia were bought secondhand.
Kellie dreamt of owning her own cafe and started Grazia three years ago on a shoestring budget. So, many of the furnishings were pre-used and adopted from other places. Re-use, recycle and re-purpose are also Earth friendly ideas which Kellie brought home from her travels.

Kellie is a coffee enthusiast, and hence there is also an espresso bar in Grazia Cafe.
Kellie loves to mail postcards to her family and friends from the place she is travelling. So she welcomes customers to buy and mail postcards from Grazia Cafe. Just hand your written postcard to the staff, and s/he will stamp and mail it for you.
Grazia serves a wide range of cafe fare such as pizzas and pastas, all with a local twist. Kellie's younger brother who had worked in a Singapore hotel before, helms the kitchen at Grazia.

The homemade cream of mushroom soup RM7.90.
Savoury and mushroomy, the soup was likable flavour wise but was blended a bit too finely for my liking. In Johor, the public generally prefers finely blended mushroom soup.

Bacon and Ham Pizza RM18.90.
A thin crispy crust topped with fried bacon, turkey ham slices, chopped capsicum and shiitake mushroom, and melted cheese.

Omelette with bacon, chicken sausage, potato wedges, and baked beans.

Simple omelette with chopped ham, this was one of most beautifully executed omelette that I have ever eaten. The eggy plump yellow torpedo had a pillowy bounce and moist texture with bits of soft savoury ham.

Egg lovers must try this omelette.

Bacon Aglio Olio RM13.90.
Spaghetti with shiitake mushroom, bacon, cheese, garlic and chili. The smooth syrupy sauce was aromatic and savoury. The pasta was cooked till slightly softer than al dente in deference to local taste buds.

Smoked Duck Aglio Olio RM16.90.
Same spaghetti with savoury smoked duck breast slices, shiitake mushroom, garlic and chili.

Brownie with ice cream RM8.90.
Generic vanilla ice cream but the warm homemade brownie was chocolaty rich, syrupy moist and buttery sweet.
Perfect with coffee.

Cappuccino RM7.90.
Brewed from a blend of Brazilian and Sumatran Arabica, the medium bodied cappuccino was gently savoury with mellow caramelly sweet notes and aroma, and citrusy aftertaste.
Nice coffee!

My coffee kaki Corrine's Americano (RM6.50) on the way. Tasted smokey and piquant.

An iced coffee we tried which was not on the menu yet :P Watch out for it :D

Grazia Cafe also serves warm blended fresh milk which are popular with customers.

A casual, cosy, family friendly chill out place with nice food and good coffee at reasonable prices.
Thank you Kellie for the invite.

Tiamo Café and Eatery in Johor Bahru, Taman Sutera Utama

I have visited Tiamo Cafe and Eatery in Taman Sutera Utama twice.
Inside Tiamo Cafe, the decor is simple but the furniture is comfortable. The air conditioned interior is very clean and neat.

Outside, at the alfresco dining area, it was bright and slightly warm. I guess it would be perfect during cool evenings.

Tiamo Cafe is managed by Nicky who was trained in hotel management in Switzerland.
Tiamo serves simple Western dishes at reasonable prices in a clean and comfortable environment.

The cream of mushroom soup (RM9.90) was made with imported mushrooms finely chopped and drizzled with whipped cream. The mushroom soup was aromatic, savoury and mushroomy.

On my second visit, the mushrooms were blended into a puree. Nicky told me that this is the general public's preference.
If you are like me who like my mushroom soup slightly grainy with spongy bits, remember to specify to the service staff.

The toasts with butter garlic spread went well with the creamy mushroom soup.

Tiamo's signature salad RM13.90.

Fried crab stick, crunchy fresh lettuce, almond flakes, and egg dressed with thick house blended sesame sauce which was savoury, sweet and slightly tangy.
Very appetizing.

Dragonball in Shell RM21.90.

Tiamo's "Dragonball" is a large button mushroom filled with chopped crab meat and cheese, and then baked. Finely chopped basil leaves are sprinkled on the melted cheese, and the spongy, juicy "Dragonball" is eaten with Tabasco sauce.
Interesting starter with layers of savouriness and spongy, gummy texture.

Grilled Salmon with Leek Sauce RM25.90. Nicely pan seared Norwegian salmon.

Spaghetti aglio olio with garlic slices, cut red chili, chili flakes and sprinkles of finely chopped basil leaves RM13.90.

Black pepper seafood pasta RM21.90.

Pasta served with mussels, dory fish, prawn, anchovies, red chili, basil leaves, and tossed in gooey black pepper sauce.

Linguine aglio olio with prawns, garlic slices, leeks, red chili and chili flakes RM18.90.
Tiamo's spaghetti's are tuned to local palates but the pasta is served al dente. The flavours are relatively pronounced relying more on sauces and spices than on oils. Tiamo's pastas dishes felt slightly drier than the Italian style which uses generous amounts of olive oil.
Not quite the traditional spaghetti but Tiamo's localised version is more attuned to Johor preferences.
Tiamo's spaghetti dishes felt a little too localised for me on first tasting (hence I didn't blogged about it then), but at the second tasting, I began to appreciate the interesting local twist.
Perhaps, if you are in the Sutera Mall area, you may want to give it a try and see if it is for you.

My cappuccino at Tiamo.
Though Tiamo is not a coffee specialist, I like the coffee here which is made with single origin Columbian Arabica beans. Tiamo's coffee has good round body, and a rich nutty sweet flavour. I didn't have to use that tube of sugar at all.

Irish Shakerato.
A deep, dark, concentrated, and refreshing ice espresso with a layer of light brown foam, spiked with Irish cream liqueur.
Nice.
Thank you David and Nicky for the invite.
