Evonne brought us to this nondescript coffee shop which we would have passed by without noticing had she not picked this shop for our first lunch for this Kluang excursion.

Kluang Best Food & Sightseeing Guide ● 10 Must Eat in Bat Town of Johor

Kluang is a good day trip destination from Johor Bahru as it is less than 2 hours of leisurely expressway driving away. It is also on the KTM railway route. If you go by train, once in Kluang, you can go anywhere with GRAB as most attractions are in the town centre (walking distance from the KTM railway station, if you like to walk like me 😄 ). Updated 3 Oct 2019. Kluang is not exactly the natural break for the drive between KL and JB - the little town is 20km from the North South Expressway exit. But, we did just that today because I had this sudden craving for the Crispy Fried Duck from STAR Restaurant in Kluang.

Updated 4 Aug 2019. Many readers from Kluang have told me that I must try the cendol stall at Jalan Dato Kaptain Ahmad. Now, after trying it myself, I will tell anyone going to Kluang that they must not leave town without trying Kluang Cendol Kadir. It's 4-Stars in my books 😋

Botak Curry Mee Kluang 摩达咖喱面 Daughter's Stall @ Mengkibol River Hawker Centre

One of my favourite places in Kluang is the sleepy row of old shops and eateries at Jalan Panggung along the narrow winding Mengkibol River. There are a few old stalwarts of the Kluang food scene here - one of them is Botak curry mee 摩达咖喱面. Everyday, locals still saunter in casually as they had done since decades past. It's very cosy and relaxing here - time, blood pressure and heart rate all slow down like the lazy, almost still water in the snaking Mengkibol River 😌

Barney's Dx. Good Food Great Time in Kluang Johor

Update 5 Aug 2019. I am back at Barney's after 2 years, this time for his "chef's table" where each guest pays RM150 - RM200 and leave themselves at Chef Barney's pleasure to personally whip up magical dishes from his lifetime in the food industry. (This dining format is similar to omakase in Japan, dégustation in France and "tasting menu" in North America.)

Yuen Fatt Yu Kong Tong Huat Nam Yick Mooncakes in Kluang Johor

The annual Mooncake Festival 中秋节 is around the corner (on 27 Sep 2015). In Kluang, Johor there are four well known traditional Chinese bakeries. Many people find going to Kluang just for mooncakes doesn't sound practical but I found it quite fun and interesting to combine it with a food trail in small town Malaysia.
