Tangkak · Muar · JB · Johor 1-Day Getaway · Food Trail Itinerary July 2022

This day trip from Singapore to Tangkak was planned around eating durian at Mt Ophir Durian (a durian shop in Tangkak town with their own durian plantation). We set off from Singapore at 7am and arrived back in Singapore the same day at 10pm.

We had an itinerary but used it only as a reference and was prepared for changes as situation required or according to our whims and fancy (that's the flexibility and fun of a DIY trip).

Eating durians is a pleasure many JB folks and Singaporeans enjoy. Enjoying durians at home or at the durian shop is fun. But, eating durians at a durian plantation is another level of pleasure. The fruits are farm fresh and prices are lower buying direct at the farm. Fortunately for JB folks and Singaporeans, Zhong Cheng Durian Farm in Kulai is just of 1 hour of leisurely drive away after clearing JB or Gelang Patah immigration.

D101 Durian from Johor. Humble but Delicious Mao Shan Wang Alternative

During this year's durian season, I developed a liking for the humble D101 durian from Johor. The bitter sweet D101 could be mistaken for the now abundant average Mao Shan Wang flooding the market but costs just ⅓ the price of the king.

Mei Chiew / Mei Qiu 美樹 / 美球榴莲 (D199 Bola 828) from Yong Peng, Johor is one of the oldest durian cultivars yet it is still relatively unknown. If you Google search Mei Chiew / Mei Qiu D199 Bola 828 美樹 / 美球榴莲 now, you will find very few search results (I mean less than half a dozen).

There is no doubt that the Mao Shan Wang 猫山王 or Musang King is the most popular and also one of most prized of all durians now. (Mao Shan Wang is named after Gua Musang town, the main fruit trading centre in Kelantan, Malaysia. The cultivar is originally from the town of Tanah Merah, also in Kelantan.)

Durian is that King of fruits that inspires men to do many things, including creating great art. Singapore has the Esplanade Theatre, and now in Johor Bahru, we have the Chocolate Durian cake from Oh My Cakes (OMC).

When I took my first bite of this taste bomb, I was stunned by the awesome taste experience. When my teeth cut through the crispy crust, it sunk into the warm top grade D24 durian flesh and released a puff of steam trapped by the crust. This hot steam carried the robust durian aroma making the fried durian taste even better than the natural fruit. I found myself unconsciously taking a deep breath and uttering softly “wow” “oh my god” to myself.
