Park Bäckerei · Handcrafted Oven Fresh Pretzel & Bagel · German Bakery in Singapore 🥨

Buddy jio-ed me to a pretzel 🥨 place called Park Bäckerei at Icon Village which is 5 minutes walk from Tanjong Pagar MRT station.

Locating shop units in shopping malls can sometimes be hard because some are literally mazes, but finding Park Bäckerei is easy as it is right at the main entrance of Icon Village 😊

Park Bäckerei is a bakery specialising in German pastries such as pretzels. Much of the space in the small shop is taken up by the kitchen (work tops & ovens), a small counter, display cabinet and a few tables and chairs.

I am always looking out for comfortable human parking spots in town to add to my list.

Park Bäckerei is the passion project of Jane. She was a former SIA cabin crew leader, then lived in Hong Kong when her husband was posted there.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, Jane started a home bake business. It was a huge success and sowed the seeds of Park Bäckerei which opened at Icon Village six months ago.

Why German pastries?

Because, Jane's hubby Dennis is German 😊

Dennis is in the pharmaceutical industry but at the moment, he is full time supporting Jane's project.

Why Park Bäckerei?

Because Jane's bakery started in Park Island where the family lived in Hong Kong.

Photo of Park Island is from Wikipedia.

Park Bäckerei is the only place in Singapore that makes pretzels from scratch, the traditional way, using flour, milk, butter, salt and sugar.

The pretzel was well browned, slightly shiny outside while inside it was fluffy white. Taste was savoury with a subtle caramelised sweetness. Texture was chewy outside but tender spongy inside, and it felt fun to the bite.

I associate eating pretzels with a kind of childhood joy because we had it as snacks when we were younger. (Park Bäckerei pretzels are different from those crunchy biscuit pretzels but evoke the same joy.)

Actually, there may be something to my intuition 🤔

According to legend, pretzels were created in the seventh century by an Italian monk as rewards for children to encourage them to study harder. Sounds so familiar 🥨

Park Bäckerei has different variations of pretzels such as this which was smothered with savoury melted cheddar cheese.

Oh... I love this salmon bagel sandwich.

It's lots of fresh greens, a clean tasting smoked salmon, and a generous spread of creamy sweetish dressing.

I love that delicious filling with the spongy sweet savoury house made freshly baked bagel. The sandwich is filling, and a complete nutritious meal.

Haha.... got a chance to see how they make their signature handcrafted turkey pretzel bun at Park Bäckerei.

Thanksgiving turkey has nothing to do with traditional German pretzels but Jane made these for the annual festival while in Hong Kong. It turned out to be a hit with children and young at heart alike, so it is on Park Bäckerei's menu 😆

Other than its look, Park Bäckerei's turkey pretzel bun is made the traditional way. Like all Park Bäckerei pretzels and bagels, the bird is bathed with alkaline lye water before baking.

An army of turkey pretzel bun on parade 😆

Freshly baked turkey pretzel buns with a shiny brown sheen.

Customer is waiting.

Turkey pretzel bun is such a great idea. I always associate pretzels with joy and fun.

Park Bäckerei's turkey pretzel buns can be filled with caramel and other fillings.

Sausage roll.

I tried several other items today. Everything I tried today, I liked. The spongy chewy texture and the savoury, subtly sweet profile were all just right for me. I love it that all the pastries are made and freshly baked right there at the shop.

Enjoyed all these freshly baked bagels and pretzels with sweet tangy warm mulled wine. So good lah.

They also have coffee ☕

Great! Now I have another comfortable human parking space in downtown Singapore to chill out with good food and drinks I enjoy 🥨
