This was kaki kaki Shirley's Thursday haunt which she shared often on Facebook. She said Thye Hong, and I always assumed it was the popular fishball stall at Ghim Moh food centre which I am also a big fan.

As the name "Famous JB 101 Firewokz" suggests, they've basically transplanted a zhi char stall from Johor Bahru and set it up in the middle of an office complex in Bukit Batok, Singapore. And, perhaps because my blog is heng heng 兴兴 (luckily) called Johor Kaki, they invited me to a media tasting 😂

Fatty Weng Singapore Bukit Batok 肥仔荣食摊

This is an old post that needs updating. I have not been here since writing this post in 2015. Please share any new information you have in the comments. Thank you.

Fatty Weng has been my long time favourite haunt when I was working and living near Bukit Batok. The two things I always went for were Fatty Weng's fish soup and orh luak (oyster omelet) together.

It's been more than 5 years since I Iast ate at Fatty Weng's.

So, I approached the kopitiam stall today with a bit of nostalgia and some trepidation. Is Fatty Weng stall still there? Is it still the same? Would I still love it as much as before?

I am so glad nothing much has changed at Fatty Weng's.

Xiang Mei Roasted Meat Bukit Batok Singapore 香美烧腊

I was stranded in Bukit Batok Central after running an errand. Took a quick browse of makan kakis Martin and Philip's Facebook posts. Their positive reviews of Xiang Mei Roasted Meat 香美烧腊 in Bukit Batok caught my eye.

One look at the golden roasted ducks in Xiang Mei's stall window, and I decided to look no further.

I quickly get into line, before the lunch crowd arrived.

I indulged in a roast duck drumstick SGD6. The large bowl of corn soup was complimentary.

Xiang-Mei-Roasted-Meat-Bukit-Batok-Singapore-香美烧腊

Muaks!

The duck flesh was tender, juicy and well infused with savoury and herbal flavours. The savoury sweet flesh was juicy as a wet sponge. Yet, I could still detect a slight natural duck flavour (which I like).

The flavours were all well balanced.

The golden brown skin was crispy and nicely savoury. The crispy smokey skin went very well with the juicy, moist, tender flesh.

The rice had the right moistness as well as light chicken and garlic flavours. (Xiang Mei also sells chicken rice.)

Xiang Mei serves a good soup.

Xiang Mei offers a different soup everyday. Today, it's corn soup which was nicely naturally sweet and it was not greasy. I drank up the whole, large bowl and didn't feel any MSG thirst afterwards.

The watery chili sauce was a blend of sour, salty and sharp spicy. I didn't use this much as I like to taste the flavour of roast duck by itself.

Mr. How 好, the boss was of course very busy but he graciously entertained me for a few moments.

I wondered where Mr. How learnt his superb roasting skills from. Mr. How told me that his family has been Cantonese meat roasters for generations. His great grandfather was a meat roaster in Guangzhou China. When Mr. How's grandfather came to Singapore, he was a meat roaster at old Bencoolen Street 五馬路. Now, Mr. How himself has been running this Cantonese roast stall in Bukit Batok for 23 years.

Xiang Mei uses larger chilled ducks from Malaysia for their more tender, juicier and sweeter meat.

Mr. How fan dries his marinated ducks in a special steel cabinet which he designed himself. The ducks at Xiang Mei are still roasted with charcoal fire.

Xiang Mei is a corner stall at the S11 kopitiam at Bukit Batok Central.

Hong Kong Roasts in Bukit Batok at Xiang Ji Roast Chicken Rice & Noodles Singapore 香记烧腊鸡饭麵

Makan buddy Benny today brought me to eat at his favourite Hong Kong or Cantonese roasts 烧腊 stall in Singapore. Benny has been a loyal customer of Xiang Ji Roast Chicken Rice & Noodles 香记烧腊鸡饭麵 in Bukit Batok for nearly 10 years.

There is always a queue at the little stall which is one of Bukit Batok's best kept secrets.

Bukit-Batok-Xiang-Ji-RoastBukit-Batok-Xiang-Ji-Roast

I managed to steal a moment from the busy boss.

Mr. Koh has been roasting meats for over forty years, starting as an apprentice in Singapore's Chinatown. Mr. Koh and wife have been running this popular stall in Bukit Batok for more than 10 years.

At Xiang Ji, things are still done the same, good old way as this big bag of charcoal and the well used roaster attest. Mr. Koh's wife and son Mervyn run the stall together with Mr. Koh as one family.

Benny ordered a mixed platter with sampling portions of roast duck, roast pork ribs, and siew yok (sio bak).

Bukit-Batok-Xiang-Ji-Roast

The roast duck 烧鸭 skin was roasted to a nice paper thin, golden crisp.

The meat was tender, moist and mildly flavoured, so it is good news for people who like lighter and less gamey flavours. Personally, I like my duck to have the taste of ......., distinct duck gaminess ;-D

Bukit-Batok-Xiang-Ji-Roast

The roast ribs 排骨.

Bukit-Batok-Xiang-Ji-Roast

The roasted ribs had nice charred edges. The tender, well marinated meat was quite sweet with a nice caramelised, charred smokey flavour.

I enjoyed chewing on that cartilage when I was younger and my teeth stronger.... woof woof ;-D

The big winner here for me is the siew yok 烧肉 (sio bak).

Siew-Yok-Sio-Bak

The crackly skin was roasted to a golden brown. The skin was not too thick and it was brittly crispy. The fat and the meat were tender, succulent and had a very mild porcine flavour which I liked.

After noticing the ropes of roast sausages hanging in the window, we decided to go for a second round even though we were already stuffed. Lup cheong 臘腸 (Cantonese style sausage) is seldom seen in roast stalls in Singapore. Since we were at it, we also threw in some char siew as well ;-D

Bukit-Batok-Xiang-Ji-Roast

Mildly savoury, moist and not overly salty. Nice to go with rice, if you are a lup cheong person ;-D

Bukit-Batok-Xiang-Ji-Roast

The char siew 叉烧 was tender and well marinated. The ratio of fat was a little less than my personal preference but would appeal to people who like less fat in their char siew. Flavour wise, this char siew was sweet savoury.

Bukit-Batok-Xiang-Ji-Roast

Benny threw in a large bowl of sui kau (shrimp dumpling) soup for good measure.

Bukit-Batok-Xiang-Ji-Roast

The large sui kau were stuffed with soft minced pork and shrimps.

Bukit-Batok-Xiang-Ji-Roast

I liked the taste and syrupy texture of Xiang Ji's brown source so much that I was basically drinking it by the spoonfuls. Slurping loudly. The savoury sweet brown sauce had a lovely smoky taste as it was blended with char siew drippings.

The chicken rice had nice garlic and chicken flavour but was a touch too moist and soft for my liking.

Bukit-Batok-Xiang-Ji-Roast

Clean tasting sambal chili with hae bee (dried shrimps).

Bukit-Batok-Xiang-Ji-Roast

Xiang Ji's roasts in BB289 kopitiam is one of Bukit Batok's best kept secrets which residents around it had quietly enjoyed for a decade ;-p

Bukit-Batok-Xiang-Ji-Roast

Xiang Ji is located in Bukit Batok's peaceful Nature View precinct and is just next to the Blk 289H multi storey car park, so parking is ample though the lower floors (1 - 3) are reserved for residents.

Thank you Buddy Benny for the lunch treat. Not sure how much this meal cost but Benny did said it was reasonably priced

Next time, we shall try Xiang Ji's roast and poached chicken, and wanton mee.
