Ipoh Kway Teow Soup @ Old Eight in One in Johor Jaya JB 八合一美食中心唐記雞絲河粉 ⭐⭐⭐⭐

After an unsuccessful food hunt this morning, I fell back on an old favourite 唐記雞絲河粉 Tang Kee Chicken Hor Fun stall in Old Eight in One Restaurant coffee shop at Johor Jaya Rosmerah. I fell in love again with Tang Kee's rendition of the Ipoh classic. The more I tried food beyond JB, the more confident I am about the quality of food here - it's just that we need to seek them out one by one.

Camera shy Mr Yong came to JB from Ipoh about 20 years ago. He declined a close-up shot of him in action because of "too many ex-girlfriends lah" we joked.

Mr Yong serves just this classic no frills Ipoh Chicken Hor Fun for RM6 - only this one plain Jane looking dish for 17 years 😮 But, he does this very, very well.

Just one sip of this soup and I swooned. And, I was on a ¾ tank full stomach.

唐記's stock has many layers of flavours from pork bones and anchovies in addition to the bulk of chicken and prawns. This round bodied savoury sweet stock perfumed with aromatic fried shallot oil was on par with any Ipoh hor fun that I have tasted in Ipoh itself in all my years. (I used to live in KL and a short day trip to Ipoh for food was one of our favourite pastimes. I still visit Ipoh occasionally.)

The chicken-prawn stock is the most important thing in Ipoh chicken hor fun and 唐記 Tang Kee got it spot on. The other things in the bowl, good as they are, are just mere accompaniments 😄

The obligatory chicken in the Ipoh chicken hor fun..... . Mr Yong gave me small strips cut from the breast. Sufficiently tender and had a subtle natural chicky sweetness. Next time, I shall ask for a drumstick which will be more tender, juicy and sweet. (I did say that to myself after my previous meal here 3 years ago but forgot to remind myself today 😂 )

The small prawns added some colour to the pale whitish shades of the dish though it didn't add much flavour - just a subtle sweetness in its tender juicy crunch 🍤

Ipoh hor fun must have kway teow.... (Tony, you are so redundant....). The rice noodles were soft, smooth, sweetish and wet with the robust savoury-sweet stock. Slurpy, delicious.

4-Star (out of 5). Why do I recommend 唐記雞絲河粉 Tang Kee Ipoh chicken hor fun in JB? Because, it was equally good compared with the best that I have tasted in Ipoh. Not sexy or cute looking but the savoury-sweet aromatic chicken-prawn-pork-anchovy stock was everything.

唐記雞絲河粉 Tang Kee is a humble stall in a typically humble JB coffee shop. It's a good place for an authentic local foodie experience.

  1. The soup here is milder and blander than the ipoh tway teow soup at the Sentosa New Star Restaurant.
