Mon Chinese Muslim Beef Roti @ Bukit Bintang • Chicken Version is Nice too

Heard a lot about Mon Chinese Beef Roti at Bukit Bintang before my KL trip, so swung by for a try.

Bukit Bintang has changed a lot over the years. But it is always full of energy and excitement, and always have new things for me to find and discover for myself.

Recently, there is a lot of excitement about Mon Chinese Beef Roti. So, we popped over to see what it is all about.

As expected, the queue was long but we got our food within 30 minutes.

Everything was made at the shop, from kneading, rolling and filling the dough, to frying the roti (bread).

Chinese beef roti is a very apt description. It is like roti prata / canai with minced beef / chicken, vegetables, and spices rolled into the bread which is then pan fried in oil till the outside is crisp and brown.

Named Chinese beef roti in Malaysia, it is a fried bread from Xi'an, China. Xi'an, formerly known as Chang'an is the eastern terminus (starting point) of the ancient Silk Road to Central Asia. In Xi'an, the fried bread is called fried beef patty. Outside of Xi'an, it is called
ๅฎซๅปท้…ฅ palace beef patty, or ๅƒๅฑ‚็‰›่‚‰้ฅผ thousand-layer beef patty or ่„†็šฎ็‰›่‚‰้ฅผ crispy beef patty.

The roti were fried in batches but were swooped up by waiting customers instantly. Some bought by the dozen, hence the constant queue and long wait.

We got ours within 30 minutes. Thick disc, well browned outside.

Like a good roti prata / canai, the bread had many layers. The outer layers were crackly crisp, while inside layers were softer, moist and soft chewy. It was a nice contrast of textures.

We had both the beef and chicken versions. The taste profiles differ but both were nice. The onion, scallion, leek, and spices (cumin, etc) added sweetness and aromas to the meat filled roti.

The warm juices from the beef / chicken and vegetable filling trapped in the roti was delicious. Reminds me of ๆฑคๅŒ… tang bao (soup bun) though not as soupy lah

At RM5.50 for chicken and RM6.50 for beef, I thought they were affordably priced.

Worth a try. Not a dish commonly found in Singapore / Malaysia. Tasty and affordable.

The fascination with Bukit Bintang never ends. I need to come back to explore this area more deeply.
