✍️ 7 Aug 2024. There was a time when foodie trips to JB was deemed to "lack something" if it didn't include a meal at Ban Heong Seng's beggar chicken at their old bangalow house along Jalan Skudai.

On the table, beggar's chicken 叫化鸡 or 乞丐 looks like any herbal chicken, which it basically is.

According to Chinese folk lore, during the Qing Dynasty 清朝, a starving beggar stole a chicken from a farm. To hide his loot, the beggar dug a hole and buried the chicken deep in mud.

Ban Heong Seng 万香城 restaurant is known for its four signature dishes. I shall call these Ban Heong Seng's “Four Heavenly Kings” dishes. Ban Heong Seng's beggar's chicken/ duck can be considered their “King of Kings”. Ban Heong Seng's other signature dishes are country fish, oyster rice and melon soup.
