My Liberica Specialty Coffee at Taman Molek, Johor Bahru

Johor coffee culture has roughly three layers. All three layers exist together, giving Johor coffee culture richness and depth.

The first layer is Nanyang coffee, best exemplified by the popular old school Hainanese kopitiams like Kin Wah and Hua Mui. The second layer is the international brands like Starbucks. The third layer is the emerging local brands such as Just Want Café, Monsta Café and My Liberica, just to name a few.

In Johor, some of the local brands are even vertically integrated, meaning they have their own plantations, processing facilities and cafés. Examples are Sai Kee Kopi 434 and My Liberica.

My Liberica is the brainchild and vision of Jason who earned his agricultural degree from Taiwan National University. On returning to Johor, Jason begun turning part of the family's oil palm plantation into a Liberica coffee plantation.

All the coffees sold at My Liberica café come from their own plantation near Bukit Batu in Johor. The ripe Liberica berries are carefully hand picked.

There are all manners of coffee machines in My Liberica, with this La Marzocco espresso machine taking centre stage.

The La Marzocco machine delivers rich and full bodied espresso coffees with My Liberica's own coffee beans.

The siphon system is the method of choice for making coffee like kopi luwak or civet cat coffee. My Liberica's kopi luwak is made with beans recovered from the droppings of wild civet cats roaming free in My Liberica's vast plantation. (Note: Johor Kaki supports only authentic and ethically harvested civet cat coffee beans.)

  1. Cat coffee beans! I'm not sure how I feel about coffee berries that have been eaten and excreted by cats but I'm sure it's ultra fragrant and satisfying for coffee connoisseurs out there. The best I can do is a cafe latte rofl.

  5. I wonder if the coffee shop offers free wi-fi? :D I don't think I can stay for very long if there's none.

  6. That's really interesting! I love the plantation to cafe idea. Though maybe when it comes to cafe design, they can take a leaf out our local coffee joints to up the hip factor :)

  9. actually it's kind of ironic to name liberica beans as Specialty coffee. Liberica beans are actually more like robusta beans which are of a lower grade than arabica beans. if im not wrong, specialty grade coffee are given to arabica beans due to its flavours, growing, processing, and harvesting method.

    1. Actually, My Liberica cafe also serves a wide variety of premium Arabica blends.

    2. Having a blend of arabica, robusta and liberica still does not make it Specialty coffee. The naming is deceiving and misleading. Just MHO

  10. Liberica beans actually taste quite bad, hence the dark roast treatment that local coffee roasters give them. My Liberica selling such low quality beans at premium prices is unacceptable from an industry viewpoint. Liberica is the coffee of choice in kopitiams due to their low costs.

However, to their credit, My Liberica knows who their customers are: coffee drinkers from the 1st layer who may be unfamiliar with arabica coffee (which tastes milder and has many more subtle flavours that are more difficult to detect).

    1. Agree with you that Arabica is apart from Liberica and Robusta beans. Actually, My Liberica cafe also serves a wide variety of premium Arabica blends. The population of discerning coffee drinkers in JB and from neighbouring Singapore is growing fast.

  11. Can anyone advise me where I can buy coffee saplings to plant at my small urban organic farm for my learning process. If I can learn more and find it feasible I would like like to turn my 16 acres old rubber plantation in Baling Kedah (not yielding anymore) into coffee plantation. Thank you in advance.
