I love, love bagels 🥯 It's one of my favourite breads. Today, we visited Palates & Bagels at Jalan Dhoby, JB's undisputed favourite bagel hangout.
Palates & Bagels is located along Jalan Dhoby in the historic Jalan Tan Hiok Nee area with many old shops repurposed into aesthetic cafes and restaurants. Just 10 minutes walk from JB CIQ, this area has become a Singaporean day trippers' playground, especially Gen Zs.
Palates & Bagels is just beside Flowers in the Window, another popular cafe in JB.
We were here early, normally, especially on weekends, there is a queue outside waiting for tables.
Palates & Bagels open at 8am, so it is even suitable as a breakfast option.
Because, there is a barber's chair on the left, it gives off vibes of an old barber shop 😀
The kuniang 姑娘 in me couldn't resist taking a photo first 😅
The reception, counter, display, are all at the ground level.
Service at Palates & Bagels is good and it is a Halal certified restaurant.
Dining space is at level 2, up a flight of stairs.
Ordering is by QR code at the table. The QR code menu was easy to use, even for me 😀 Payment at the downstairs counter here before leaving.
Once upstairs, we were immediately struck by how beautifully photogenic the space was.
Went around to take photos as there weren't many other customers around yet 🫢
Tables cater to groups and also just a couple.
Spicy Butter Milk Chicken Bagel.
The bagel was spongy, airy, slightly sweet like a bun - a little different from my past experience with bagels which were chewy - firmer, denser inside while slightly crisp outside.
The sandwich was filled with battered fried chicken, stewed onion, a slice of cheese, egg, tomato, cucumber, sauce, etc.
Truffle Mash with Poached Eggs.
Same airy fairy spongy sweet bun type inside with a lightly browned but soft outside. We opted for sesame seed coated outside.
Paired with two scoops of mashed potatoes laced with "truffle" oil and a couple of runny poached eggs.
A nice beautifully done cappuccino. Robust, nutty, full bodied, aromatic Arabica.
Butter Scotch Sea Salt Latte.
Kaki kaki say it's nice.
Took these photos on our way out - looked seriously, lusciously attractive. Will be back for cake, coffee and more photos 😀
I look at it this way. Buy a coffee, a cake and get a nice "studio" to take photos 🫢
In case you wondered what T.A.M. stands for.

Major bucket list, Johor's #1 bagel checked 🥯

Bagels originate in Eastern Europe. Wheat flour with salt and water are kneaded, rolled into a thick rope, form a ring (like a doughnut with a hole in the middle). It is cooked by boiling in water, then dried and browned by baking in an oven.
I like traditional bagels which are relatively dense, firm and chewy inside while the outside is slightly browned and crisp. Very interesting mix of textures.
More places you can try at JB's Tan Hiok Nee area 👈
