Continuing my ayam gepuk journey, this time at Ayam Gepuk Story at Taman Molek. It's located right across Jalan Masai Baru from Johor Jaya Police Station.
The interior was somewhat bare bones. Minimal decor, simple furnishings but comfortable enough and air conditioned. The floor, especially the toilet had a greasy slick when we were there ๐บ
Order and pay at the cashier, return to your table, collect your food at the pick-up when your order number is called. Refill of sambal, sauce and rice, were permitted.
The menu all on one page. I opted for set D.
RM16.90 everything in - nasi / rice, ayam goreng / fried chicken, timun / cucumber, kubis goreng / fried cabbage, tauhu / bean curd, tempe / fermented soy bean, pedal / fried chicken offal, plus a soft drink.
It was well marinated with spices and aromatics. Fried till golden brown outside, inside tender but relatively dry. Quite flavoursome and aromatic, though slightly chewy.
They have three levels of spiciness. I opted for level 1, the least spicy. The staff was generous with the sauce.
Wow the sambal was spicy hot ๐ฅ even though it was at level 1. The cashew nut sauce was nutty, creamy, rich, savoury, sweet.
I enjoyed every bite of chicken with this sambal and cashew nut sauce.
The savoury sweet kicap is crucial to the ayam gepuk dish - it was nice. The rice we had today, was slightly firm, caked, and dried out.
The kubis or fried cabbage was crunchy, juicy, savoury sweet, and didn't feel greasy.
Fried tempe, offal, tofu were all good.
Refill of sambal and cashew nut sauce was obliged generously. Shiok.
More and many more restaurants have jumped on the ayam gepuk bandwagon and I believe the trend will keep on growing. I expect ayam gepuk will become mainstream and a staple like ayam penyet.
Ayam Gepuk Story's offering is competitive.
