Social media is recently abuzz with a new bak chor mee stall at Maxwell Food Centre. The 22 year old culinary school trained grandson of famous Ah Ter bak chor mee of Amoy Street Food Centre has just set up his own outpost at nearby Maxwell Food Centre.

(Maxwell Food Centre, ground zero of the Singapore chicken rice war zone is slowly emerging as a bak chor mee battleground as well but that's a story for another post 😬 )

History of Maxwell Food Centre - From Chinese Burial Ground to Famous Hawker Centre in Singapore

Maxwell-Road-Food-Centre-Singapore

Maxwell Food Centre is not the largest hawker centre in Singapore but it is one of the most famous and busy because of the popular food stalls here and its central location in Chinatown. But, the 92 year road to glory was not a straightforward one for Maxwell Food Centre - there were quite a few unexpected twists and turns, blind corners and even some drama along the way.

Empress Place Teochew Beef Kway Teow @ Maxwell Food Centre. A Hock Lam Street Tradition Since 1921

While having morning coffee with Stella who works near Maxwell Road Food Centre, she mentioned that Empress Place Teochew beef kway teow is one of her favourite stalls there. As a beef noodle lover, I decided to have it for brunch straightaway 😄 (Update: This stall is closed since Apr 2020.)

Which is the Most Popular Fish Soup Stall @ Maxwell Food Centre? Yi Jia Fish Soup, if you Go by how People Vote with their Feet

You know right, when I go food hunting, I prefer to go in "blind" and find things out for myself from scratch (without doing online "research" beforehand).

Fuzhou Oyster Cake is a traditional street food rarely seen in Singapore nowadays. If you are in Maxwell Road Food Centre, you can try one of Singapore's last few Fuzhou oyster cake stalls.

China Street Cooked Food Rickshaw Noodles @ Maxwell Market Food Centre Singapore 拉車麵

China Street Cooked Food Rickshaw Noodle is one of the last places in Singapore to taste this humble but historic heritage dish. It is the cheap sustenance that once powered the human drawn rickshaws that plied Tanjong Pagar and Kreta Ayer. The rickshaws were long gone but rickshaw noodles 拉車麵 and the nearby rickshaw depot building remain as reminders that early Singapore was founded on the bare, sweaty backs of our hardy pioneers.

Heng Heng Ondeh Ondeh & Tapioca Cake @ Maxwell Hawker Food Centre Singapore 中国街興興

So often in those moments of food longings, it's not those past fanciful meals that unexpectedly intrude into my consciousness but much humbler childhood delights. For me, often it's just sweets - ondeh ondeh and tapioca cakes to be precise. What about you?

CLOSED Lim Kee Orchard Goreng Pisang Fried Banana Fritters @ Maxwell Road Food Centre

Lim-Kee-Orchard-Goreng-Pisang-Fried-Banana

These must be the most famous fried banana fritters (pisang goreng) in the world. How many fried banana stalls can count Prime Ministers, Presidents and Royalty from several countries as their fervent fans? I only know of the legendary Lim Kee (Orchard) 林记油炸芎蕉.

Ramen Taisho Maxwell Road Food Centre. Best Hawker Ramen in Singapore

Ramen-Taisho-Best-Hawker-Centre-Ramen

Lunched today at Ramen Taisho at Maxwell Road Food Centre. I was a little early, so I was treated to a glimpse of the partially raised shutter. So cute, right? Ramen Taisho stall is located diagonally across from Tian Tian chicken rice (which always has a long queue of tourists, so you can't miss it).
