You know right, when I go food hunting, I prefer to go in "blind" and find things out for myself from scratch (without doing online "research" beforehand).
Spending the past month, combing Maxwell Food Centre for the most popular stalls, I saw that the queue at Yi Jia Teochew Fish Porridge & Fish Soup 一家潮州魚粥.魚湯 was always the longest among all the fish soup stalls here. So, I was rather surprised when I found out afterwards that Yi Jia doesn't really have much online presence.
Tried to engage camera shy stall boss Mr Liew but couldn't make any head way 😂 But, they did share that they were here at Maxwell Food Centre for over 20 years and the stall by the same name Yi Jia Teochew Fish Porridge & Fish Soup 一家潮州魚粥.魚湯 at Tekka Market & Hawker Centre is by a relative.
I had the fish soup with rice separately, my preferred way of eating fish soup. I always like to have my fish soup without bee hoon or rice inside (which I feel will change the taste profile of the soup).
The soup was light, clean tasting, mildly savoury sweet. The soup infused a bit of fresh fish sweetness and taste of the aromatic tang oh vegetable 茼蒿. I enjoyed it.
The Batang fish (Spanish mackerel) slices were fresh and tasted subtly naturally sweet. Yi Jia also have the premium white pomfret fish and prawns but I always opt for Batang when I eat fish soup. Yeah lah... I am quirky like that... .
I had the fish roe which felt feather light in the mouth and tasted subtly sweet in a different way from fish meat. It was also subtly eggy but in a way nothing like chicken egg egginess. It's nice, I enjoyed it.
I also had this fish sperm sac or milt (is it because I am an old uncle? 😂😅 ). The sac pops like a large fruit sac when you bite into it.
Makan kaki had the Teochew fish porridge because he is a Teochew Ah Hia. Didn't ask him how it tasted, but he seemed very contented so it must be not bad also lah 😄
Recommended for you 👍 Nice traditional Teochew fish porridge and fish soup. But, be prepared to queue especially during lunch time.

Recommend that you try Heng Heng Fish Soup at 505 Jurong West Market/Food Center. The soup taste favorably of teepo & garlicky. They are probably the only fish soup stall I know who give you sambal blachan which tastes great.
