Down at 11 Upper Circular Road across South Bridge Road north from the touristy riverside restaurants at Boat Quay is a cosy friendly little, unpretentious wine bar known as La Terre.

Zhong Xing Foochow Fishball Noodle & Lor Mee @ Silat Ave Nan Heong Ho Kee Coffeeshop • Closed Since Aug 2024

✍ 28 Aug 2024. Sadly, this heritage fishball noodle stall founded in 1942 has just shut down due to monthly rental doubling to more to $6000.

✍ 19 Feb 2023. Was feeling a little famished after a three hour guided history tour of Telok Blangah (more about that in a future post). So, I went to look for lunch at the Silat Ave area. Stumbled upon the quiet Nan Heong Ho Kee kopitiam and Zhong Xing Foochow Fishball & Lor Mee stall.

A quick peek at the stall and it ticked all the boxes for me - handmade fishball, sambal, and pork lard (furthermore it was Foochow style fishball, which is not so common in Singapore).

CLOSED Ah Song Hakka Mee was one of my first posts when I stumbled upon the little stall along Jalan Lumba Kuda in 2012 i.e. 10 years ago. Glad to hear that they now have a branch at Taman Impian Emas (near Skudai and Senai).

When buddy Jimmy heard that I am exploring the old Desker Road area by night, he jio (invited) me to join him at Super Supper. This newly opened (in May 2022) diner of sorts is really quite fascinating and the eclectic menu has delicious eccentric dishes. I like it. I also realised that despite its name, supper is not its only game - Super Supper actually opens at 12 noon and is a great place for lunch too.

You know, I am not really a big fan of satay bee hoon. I don't really fancy splashing nutty satay sauce over blanched bee hoon and call it a dish. Jin Ji is the first satay bee hoon I've tried in Singapore that doesn't taste totally like satay sauce.  (Update: This stall has closed as owner has retired 😔 )

This week's hawker centre stalking target is Taman Jurong Market & Food Centre. I was zeroing in on Ng Kee Teochew Fish Ball Kuay Teow Mee which was recommended to me a few years back 😅 I finally made it today (Jurong a bit far for me lah 😅 ). But, my attitude in life is "better late than never" 😂

CLOSED Recently, a wanton mee stall at block 632 in Yishun took the social media world by storm with two hour queues for their authentic Hong Kong style duck egg noodles. Its main selling point is owner chef Kin was formerly with the Crystal Jade chain of restaurants. As a wanton mee lover, I was curious and eager to give it a try.

Today, went to check out the newly opened Xin Tekka food court which is just steps from Rochor MRT station. I like the 3 Nyonya dishes I tried at Casa Bom Vento Express including one of Singapore's rare nasi ulam, and it was a good one 😋.

CLOSED Grandfather's Old Amoy Chendol @ Singapore Chinatown Terengganu Street Food Stalls

Chendol or cendol is one of the most popular and iconic of Southeast Asian ice desserts. It's a godsend on humid hot days in tropical Asia. But, authentic cendol is hard to find nowadays - in Singapore, you can perhaps count them all with the fingers on one hand (and 3 of them are Old Amoy Chendol 😂 ).

CLOSED. Friends who are familiar with Bukit Mertajam 大山脚 in Penang will know about the iconic lok lok there (known as chiam chiam 串串 or batang rojak on Penang island). It is cut fresh fruits eaten with sauce based on hae ko (fermented prawn paste). Now, there is BM High School Lok Lok stall which is at Level 3 of City Square Johor Bahru (steps from the Old Town White Coffee outlet).
