✍️ 6 Sep 2026. I first had Ah Er Soups in 2015 when it was at Superbowl in Jurong. Ten years on, Ah Er has earned its place in the Michelin guide Bib Gourmand list and expanded to several outlets.
I was at Ah Er Soup's ABC Market outlet today. Opted for their signature Buddha Jump over the Wall soup as that was what I had ten years ago.
Amazingly the price hasn't changed much from SGD$7 for the last ten years to $7.50 today.
Let's take a closer look.
The soup was cloudy, slightly viscous. It tastes mildly umami savoury from bone, mushroom and dried seafood with a bit of sweetness from wolfberry and red dates.
Let's dive deep below the murky surface.
Clockwise from the left - mushroom, chicken, shellfish, dried fish maw, red date, wolfberry.
There really weren't a lot of ingredients for Ah Er's Buddha Jump over the Wall but still good value for $7.50.
Looking at these photos I took in 2015, chicken, shellfish, fish maw, mushroom, the ingredients in the mini pot is basically the same.
The mushrooms flavoured the soup with umami and I love its spongy texture and savoury woody taste.
Two chunks of chicken. Boiled till soft, not much flavours left as all have been surrendered to the soup. Some people actually discard this but I ate it lah... Still got protein mah... And tastes palatable with soy sauce and cut chili.
Tender shellfish (likely canned). Added its umami to the soup.
Dried fish maw. Spongy soft leathery texture loaded with flavours sponged from the soup.
Basically the same satisfying soup with perhaps a slight dilution of flavours but for almost the same price since 2015. I shall try other soups in Ah Er Soup's menu.

✍ 20 Apr 2015. Today is one of those days when I just wanted a comforting soup for lunch; been eating a little too much and the sweltering heat is also getting to me.
So, I made my way to Singapore's west at Superbowl Leisure Park, Yuan Ching Road for the popular soups at 阿2老火汤.
阿2老火汤 is one of the dozen of stalls at the large food centre at Superbowl Leisure Park.
The large food centre here serves mostly residents and workers who work around the Jurong area. It's bright, clean and reasonably cool without air con.
The boss, Mr Mah who hails from Ipoh, has been running 阿2老火汤 soup stall for 4 years now.
There are altogether 12 types of Cantonese style soups at 阿2老火汤 soup stall.
阿2 signature Buddha Jump over the Wall soup 佛跳牆 SGD7.
In the heavy full bodied, full flavoured savoury sweet broth, there is a chicken leg, Chinese black mushrooms, fish maw pieces and even 2 slices of
Pig Maw soup SGD4.
Savoury, sweet and robustly peppery full bodied broth with spongy tender slices of pig maw and herbs.
Pig Tail soup SGD5.
Inside the savoury sweet heavy broth there are pig tail, ribs, black beans and herbs.
Overall, all the three soups we had had strong flavours and full bodied, viscous consistency broth. The piping hot soups were also generously loaded with ingredients. Not too greasy and no MSG is used according to Mr Mah.
We happily drank up all 3 bowls of soup to the last drop.
If you like heavy broth, savoury sweet and not overly herbal flavours, 阿2老火汤 is for you.
Besides the white rice there are the pumpkin and olive rice options. The rice are flavourful but not too fluffy and of average quality grains. They are value for money at 80 cents for the pumpkin rice and SGD1 for the olive rice.
The food centre is just beside (on the left of) ShengSiong supermarket and can be accessed by walking through it.

If I not wrong... they have a brancj in Ang Mo Kio, used to have enough ingredients per bowl of soup. But now they changed helper and the ingredients are so pathetic, very little, only one or two VERY small pieces of meat on the lotus root soup. The new China helper lady has very bad attitude anf refuses to let us contact the boss.
ReplyDeleteRecently the ingredients back to normal. Maybe many people unhappy about this. Shall observe... and see...
ReplyDeleteNot standardized... after they hired new helpers... their soup sometimes very little ingredients... sometimes normal. As if everytime we buy must depends on luck to get normal portion. Just wondering if the boss knows the PRC helpers are reducing the portions in AMK branch... the one besides courts and post office
ReplyDeleteNow everything seems good portion already but shall continue to observe. Nowadays stall holders or bosses must keep an eye on the PRC helpers. Not all are bad but I did witness other stalls closed down because of these helpers mess up because of their attitude problem or reduce a large portion in the meal. This stall's soup very nice but just that the boss need to be careful of the helpers he hires.
ReplyDeleteStall closed. Wondering where they will open next?
ReplyDeleteToday went there. Their ingredient very little. Getting lesser and lesser each time. NOT Recommended. Don't waste your time and stomach to stall these food.
ReplyDeleteWhat I am saying is all the truth. I love the soup there. That's why disappointed with their drop of standard suddenly. I went there to look for the boss and in the end the helper refused to give the contact. I contacted mediacrop... they asked me to write in. No choice but to complain here... just hope that the boss will notice the helper was reducing the ingredients... maybe with him noticing? Just find that is such a pity that such good soup with good ingredients suddenly reduced the portion by half... maybe due to hire the wrong person... and we couldn't tell the boss... can't find him. What a joke to scold people like this. I Don't find the soup bad... I just find is a pity. Anyway the branch closed down. That's what I heard. If you don't want people to be anonymous then don't publish. All the while I was praising the soup... only commented the helper may be reducing the ingredients... may be without the knowledge of the boss. I love the soup that's why hope the boss can check about this. How can you scold people like this.
ReplyDeleteWill not visiting this website again. The author is rude and he is also speaking ill of others too. The way the author never read properly about people's comments and the way the author commented is no difference from speaking ill behind others and anyhiw wrong people... and put words into other people's mouth. Please don't judge people with your own perspective. Won't be visiting this unfair website which only can say praises but nit the truth
ReplyDeleteLast thing to say is that the soup is very delicious which I mentioned many times... so will be still buying from other branch... just hope the boss will hire good helpers.
ReplyDeleteDear anonymous, until now I haven't said a single word in reply to your comments 🤔
