After running our errand at Mount Austin, we checked around with locals on what is good to eat around here. A few people pointed us to Guoma Steamboat 锅妈台式火鍋 which is very popular with locals.
Guoma Steamboat is an economic, buffet style all-you-can-eat restaurant. There's sliced beef, pork, mutton, and chicken. Seafood includes cuttlefish, squid, prawns, bamboo clams, fish etc. There were lots of vegetables and also noodles etc. Most of the food were frozen but priced at RM39.00+ all-you-can-eat per adult, I feel it is a fair deal.
A printed notice on the wall states that there is a 2-hour dining limit during peak hours and uneaten food will be weighted and charged.
The interior is clean and comfortable. The tables are equipped with flameless induction cookers, so room temperature is not hot at all. The tables are spread out nicely so we do not feel packed tightly together.
Guoma offers two kinds of soup base - mala 麻辣 and clear chicken stock in a 2-section pot 鸳鸯汤鍋.
The sauce station has lots of choices. We like this savoury tangy nutty blend known as Special Guoma Sauce 特调锅妈酱. I threw in an egg for smoother, thicker texture and eggy taste.
There were thinly sliced chilled beef, pork, mutton and chicken. I like the mutton (left) as it had mild lamb gaminess.
Their most popular cut is the beef but there was very little beefiness.
The thin slices of meat are easily cooked simply by dipping it in the boiling stock and brushing 涮涮 it through the stock seven times. It's a technique I was taught a long time ago, forgotten when and by whom. Now, it is just a mindless habit 😄
Some people are at Guoma just for the prawns.
The prawns are fresh, taste good and does wonders to the stock.
I love root vegetables, they are sweet and sweeten the stock which we drink at the end of the meal.
Topping up of stock is self serve. I prefer the clear clean tasting chicken stock. The salty spicy mala stock tasted mainly of powdered flavourings, like instant noodle stock.
I always look forward to the soup at the end of a steamboat meal as I enjoy the fully loaded soup with lots of layers of savoury sweet flavours from all the ingredients that had gone through it.
I forgot to try their lo rou fan 台式卤肉饭 (braised pork rice) this time 😂 Have to come back (probably check out their Kulai outlet next time) 😄
👉 Guoma 锅妈台式火鍋 is an economic steamboat buffet. It is well stocked with lots of meat, seafood, vegetables, etc The ingredients are average quality but it is a very fair deal at RM39.90+ per adult / RM29.90+ per child. We can enjoy a sumptuous meal in a comfortable restaurant.
