I came to Choi Ngiap fish head bee hoon shop 财叶鱼头米粉 at Jalan Ah Siang after seeing buddy Andy's Facebook post. I love simple, old school fish soups 😋
Choi Ngiap fish head bee hoon shop is right at the junction of Jalan Ah Siang and Jalan Lingkaran Dalam (Inner Ring Road). I love eating in casual, open, breezy places like this - it feels very relaxing.
Mr. Chai founded Choi Ngiap in 1986 (31 years ago), first operating outside the "Lori Kastam" (lorry checkpoint in JB CIQ). He has many multi-generation fans who are loyal customers to this day as their parents brought them to Choi Ngiap decades ago.
Mr. Chai's son Ian is helping out at the stall and will be taking over the business soon, so we can enjoy Choi Ngiap's fish soup for many more years.
Most of the flavours of the clear stock came from fresh fish and pork bones, and ti poh (dried sole fish).
Choi Ngiap serves fish head bee hoon, fish head soup, fish soup, fish porridge, hand made fish balls, pork organ soup, and sides like braised chicken feet.
I asked the lady boss if I can have just fish meat and belly in my soup. She replied "Of course". My fish soup with rice came to RM11, which I thought is very reasonable.
The light, clear soup had a mild savoury sweetness. (May be too mild for some but I like this as it allows me to taste the fish's delicate natural flavours.)
The sea bass fish was fresh and done just right. The meat was tender and it had a sweet taste with a slight underlying earthiness characteristic of farmed sea bass.
I enjoyed Choi Ngiap fish soup with sea bass meat and belly. Next time, I shall try the fish head and hand made fish balls.
