Thanks to Buddy Shannon's recommendation, I tried Pa Abib's famous nasi beryani in Tepian Tebrau food centre. Pa Abib's little stall is indeed very popular - there was a constant stream of long time regulars who come and take away packets of nasi briyani. Pa Abib opens at 4pm and is usually sold out before 7pm.
Puan Salwa runs Pa Abib Nasi Beryani which was founded by her late father. The family hailed from Teluk Kurau in Singapore in the 1970s where Pa Abib was a caterer. Pa Abib started his nasi beriyani stall over 30 years ago outside Sultanah Aminah Hospital at Lido Beach. (Several stalls at Tepian Tebrau started from there.) Many of Pa Abib's regulars had been his customers from Lido Beach days. We met a Chinese couple who have been Pa Abib fans for over 20 years. "From RM5 a set, till now" the lady said 😄
We had two sets of nasi beriyani today - a lamb (RM13) and a beef set (RM12).
The basmati rice plus other rice in the mix were cooked with flavoursome and aromatic spices but in moderate amounts, so it was rather mild. The rice was fluffy and not greasy. It was slightly sweet from the more starchy rice in the mix.
The chunk of beef comes with bone in a small dish of heavy thick sauce. The meat was tender and there was very little, if any beefiness. The sauce was slightly robust savoury spicy and quite greasy. The sauce also had a mild spice aroma.
The mutton was fully meat and more tender than the beef due to visceral fat. There was a slight lamb gaminess in the juicy meat which I like. It was served with the same savoury spicy thick greasy sauce.
Puan Salwa told me that she uses the same recipe handed down from her dad, which leans on salty flavours whereas most Johor nasi briyani are sweeter.
The savoury sourish spicy crunchy achar (pickled vegetables) served with the nasi beriani.
It's hard to resist Yong Yong's famous ice kacang when having Pa Abib's nasi briyani. I love the chocolate inside. Yong Yong is just a couple of stalls to the left of Pa Abib in Tepian Tebrau. Like Pa Abib, Yong Yong also has its roots at Lido Beach.

I have visited this restaurant ever since i was young,This is No ordinary Nasi Briyani , this is the champion of the champion. Taste is excellent and serving is quite generous although the price is on the high side , however the taste is just Solid. I like the Beef Briyani as its very tender and nicely cooked. Whenever someone ask for recommendation for Briyani , this will be the first stall that comes across my mind.
ReplyDeleteThank you Shannon for your recommendation and insight. Indeed this is a good nasi briyani, well loved by its many long time fans. We met some of them during our visit :-D
