Before our day trip to Yang Ming Shan, we swung by the famous Jin Feng Lu Rou Fan 金峰滷肉飯 for brekky - it's boiled rice topped with roughly chopped braised pork belly eaten with a variety of side dishes. It's like Singapore / Malaysia's "economy rice" 經濟飯 or 雜菜飯. But, the humble staple is revered as a food icon in Taiwan. They even have keenly contested annual competitions to honour the best LRF shops in Taiwan.
Lu Rou Fan shops and stalls are everywhere in Taiwan. Jin Feng Lu Rou Fan 金峰滷肉飯 at Roosevelt Road was touted as the best (by CNN in 2015). I am just glad to have the opportunity to taste a good example of Taiwan's well loved dish. Jin Feng is conveniently located 1 minute's walk from C.K.S. Memorial subway station (use exit 2).
I love it that eating in Jin Feng is a true authentic foodie experience - eating local food with local folks. Jin Feng is one of the most famous Lu Rou Fan shops in Taipei but I am glad that it was not "spoilt" by tourists and fame 😄
The menu cum order form is in Chinese only, so it is slightly challenging for non Chinese speakers 😂
Fortunately, they have an English menu with colour pictures which is very helpful. Just ask for it. Alternatively, just go to the serving point and use the universal pointing language 😄
There were many dishes to choose from but we were quite restrained as Jin Feng was just one of many food stops for today's food trail. Anyway, all my favourites were there 😄
The starchy sweet stubby pearly rice was tender with a subtle nutty bite which I like. It was topped with savoury sweet strips of tender braised pork belly and mushroom. The braising stock, fat and oil added more savoury flavours to the dish and greased our smacking lips 😋
(Can't do this lu rou fan in Singapore or Malaysia unless we use the same rice, pork and soy sauce 😂 )
Savoury sweet pork belly 椌肉 was relatively drier (than 滷肉). I won't order this again.... .
Stewed bamboo shoot. I love the way Taiwanese do their bamboo shoots. Love the savoury sweetness with underlying characteristic taste and springy crunch of bamboo shoot.
Fresh, simply done greens always tastes good 😄
肉羹湯 Tender minced pork "cake" soup with mushroom and bamboo shoot. Natural porky sweetness balanced with savouriness.
They have a steamed soup station and we had a ginseng chicken. Nice, though I can't remember much of it - enjoying the meal and company too much I guess, and forgot to put on my blogger hat 😄
Leftovers Analysis 👉 Nothing left actually 😄 What more can I say.... I like it that the well balanced savoury sweet flavours were quite mild and so widely appealing. I enjoyed it too as it had a homely feel - the food and the place. It is easy to overeat eat at Jin Feng as the dishes come in small servings and they are all so delicious 😄
4-Stars (out of 5). My first trip to Taiwan was in 1981 and it's only in 2017 that I had my first lu rou fan even though LRF is everywhere 😂 Don't be like Tony - I strongly discourage visitors from leaving Taiwan without at least one lo rou fan meal 😄 If you are in Taipei, I suggest Jin Feng Lu Rou Fan as the food is tasty, price competitive, offers opportunities to mingle with locals, shop is world famous but still well grounded, and the shop is super accessible by subway (C.K.S. Memorial station - exit 2).
For my future trips to Taiwan, I shall check out more lu rou fan shops, especially favourites picked by locals.
