Makansutra Gluttons Bay has a simple plan to make happy gluttons of everyone on Wednesdays at the famous bay side Singapore street food haven.
For $19 per person, we can have unlimited servings of a selection of ten Singapore zi char favourites from the Hong Kong Street Old Chun Kee stall at the famous Gluttons Bay. $19 nett, no hidden charges, no gimmicks.
Gluttons Bay have upped the game with a $29 buffet that includes chili crab, pepper crab, pipa chicken, prawns and more. I think it's an even better deal 👈 click
Look for the stall nearest to the Bay, with the signboard BBKIA STINGRAY. It is operated by Hong Kong Street Old Chun Kee which is a well established name in Singapore zi char.
"Zi char" literally means "cook and fry" which is all about wok hei - that toasty roasty taste and aroma of caramelisation imparted by food crazy-dancing on a superheated wok. You get plenty of wok hei by Hong Kong Street Old Chun Kee's seasoned chef at no extra charge.
Here's what you get for just $19. Each dish is fried on order and served sizzling hot in true zi char style - no cost cutting, mass pre-cooking nonsense.
Har Cheong Gai Chop - here it is boneless chicken thigh marinated with savoury fermented prawn paste and deep fried to a golden brown crisp outside. Oh... that crisp, tasty skin.
Indonesian Lemongrass Chicken. Double deep fried chunks of chicken coated with sweet, gently spicy, aromatic kicap manis and lemongrass sauce.
Sweet and Sour Pork. You want the proverbial classic sweet and sour pork? Here it is - good ol' deep fried pork wrapped in batter and coated with sweet, perky zesty flavours.
Mongolian Pork Ribs. Not sure if the Great Khan ever had this but I am confident that he will order more than once with his hordes😝
Fried Seafood Tofu.
Onion Omelette.
Baby Kailan. Nice expertly stir fried crunchy leafy greens smothered in a mild savoury sauce.
Sambal Kang Kong. This humble stir fried vegetable dish is one of my favourites at home and anywhere that serves it. Crunchy greens in a mild umami savoury fermented prawn sauce with gentle heat.
Cereal Fried Rice with bits of prawn etc., and topped with light toasted cereal. Full flavour, almost no grease at all.
Hong Kong Noodle with squid rings, prawn, bean sprout, cabbage, carrot etc., stir fried in savoury soy sauce.
Attacking this buffet needs strategy. First round order all the ten dishes (except those dishes you are allergic to). Taste them all, then re-order more rounds of your favourite dishes. It is easy to win at this a la carte buffet 😄
Come with your troops and set aside the whole evening - your cycling gang, football team, hiking mates, photo club, makan kakis, etc. Get your buckets of beers, then you will be well lubricated to assault the menu - "own time, own target" as we say in Singapore.
Gluttons Bay is a really chill, breezy and cool place to hang out.
In case I made it sound like this is only for beer guzzling glutton hordes, my bad. Actually, this $19 a la carte zi char buffet is equally great as a budget friendly, happy family friendly feast.
How many children around the world got initiated to Chinese cuisine on sweet and sour pork and still haven't tire of it? 🙋♂️ Raise your hand or kee chwee as we say in Singapore.
It was a clear, breezy evening for beers and zi char to our hearts' content. Taking a walk by the Bay after a sumptuous meal surely lifts spirits and reminds us what a wonderful world we live in.
