Makansutra Gluttons Bay is a collection of popular independent Singapore hawker food stalls curated by KF Seetoh.
The stall offering this $29 buffet with crab deal is known as "BBKIA STINGRAY". It is at the end of the row nearest to the waterfront. Psst... it is actually operated by a branch of the famous Hong Kong Street Old Chun Kee Cantonese zhi char restaurant.
Ah Yau, the stall owner says a minimum of 4 persons will be able to enjoy the a la carte buffet at $29 nett per pax.
For $29 x 4 = $116 nett, we can get either one serving of chili crab or pepper crab, one serving of "guitar chicken", and unlimited servings of other dishes like Hong Kong steamed sea bass, white boiled prawns, bitter gourd black bean sauce pork ribs, homemade prawn roll, etc.
The food is served at your table like in a restaurant.
Not bad waaat.... ๐
But, tasty or not? If not delicious, free flow also no use right..... ?
The chili or pepper crabs are made with live crustaceans of around 500 grams weight (I guess looking at them in the box).
The crab meat is juicy and sweet.
I like the old school black pepper crab sauce too. The mild peppery heat brings out the sweetness of the crab meat very well.
Chili or black pepper? Pick one.
This "guitar" or pipa chicken is a sure hit with children or the younger crowd. Boneless, crisp outside, tender and moist inside. Marinated with fermented prawn paste it tastes savoury with a touch of sweet. Comes with a dark sauce but I didn't use it. The "guitar" har cheong gai tastes good enough by itself.
The deboned "guitar" chicken is deep fried till golden brown outside a la minute on order. Each table of four is allowed one serving, so just get it - can't go wrong, this one.
Other than the crab (choose one, either chili or black pepper) and "guitar" chicken, the other dishes are all free flow.
This White Boiled Prawn has natural sweetness from its tender crunchy body and umami from its head. It comes with a savoury salty spicy chili sauce, but no need lah...., the blanched finger size, fresh prawn is sooo... good by itself ๐ฆ
Eat as much as you like ๐
If Cantonese style Hong Kong Steamed Sea Bass is your thing, then this buffet is for you. Simply steamed with a blend of savoury soy sauce and aromatic oil to complement and bring out the fish's sweetness.
Eat as much fish as you like. Incredible but true.
The "fish maw" is actually deep fried hor fun (broad rice noodles) which are crisp and chewy. It is served with a savoury sweet eggy sauce, chicken, squid, prawn and vegetables.
Where do Gluttons Bay get so much prawns that we can eat them free flow? ๐ค Don't ask so much, delicious, just eat lah ๐
