Chit chatting with the owners of Song Fa Bak Kut Teh, and don't know how they mentioned that they love the braised pork leg at Eng Kee in Ang Mo Kio. Like that how lah....., that got me excited and craving it since hearing about it.
Finally got to try it today 🕺 Was closed the first time we came here 🥹
Got this for two of us to share. Price $7.50, another 50 cents for the rice.
This was our fourth dish for this morning's food trail 🤭
First looks, it looked like a large drumstick rather than pork leg or trotter (actually it was the shoulder).
It looked lean with a bit of fat. Immediate regret - next time have to tell auntie we want the fatty cut (as we are uncles, one old uncle and one young uncle 🤭 ).
Actually, even the lean part was tender and mildly sweet. The savoury sweet braising sauce complemented the meat well. There was no trace of Chinese five spice (e.g. star anise, cinnamon, etc) nor herbs (e.g. liquorice). So it was nicely savoury sweet, if a little flat for some without any spice or herbs. There were garlic cloves though.
I love the fatty part with skin and meat as it has more contrasting textures and the fat added more sweetness and juiciness to the taste profile.
Pro tip (for old uncles 👴 ): Remember to ask for the fatty cut with more skin and fat.
Indeed a nice braised pork leg / trotter shoulder 👍 We enjoyed it. Buddy tabao-ed (takeaway) one for his wife. Dare to tabao for wife means five star rating lah ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Another bak kut teh which main selling point is their ter kar (pork trotter) 👈 click
