Tried Bebek Goreng Pak Ndut after stumbling upon it while running errands at Lucky Plaza, Orchard Road.
Bebek Goreng Pak Ndut is a fast food style chain restaurant from Bandung, Indonesia.
Full house at Bebek Goreng Pak Ndut on this Sunday lunch with a queue outside.
The whole Lucky Plaza is a hive of activities and comes alive on weekends and public holidays. It's a budget food haven smack in the middle of Singapore's tourist shopping belt. It's a treasure trove of Indonesian and Filipino food gems, many tucked in inconspicuous nooks, alleys and corners around the huge mall.
Made our orders and paid at the reception before assigned available seats inside.
The fast food style space was compact. Seating was a tight squeeze, especially on busy weekends and public holidays.
Once seated, food was delivered pretty fast. Food was served to our table, not self service ๐
The spice marinated, par boiled duck leg was deep fried till it was dry and well browned outside. The dark reddish meat inside was tender and moist.
Savoury and nice spice flavour from 24-hour marination, with very little duck taste or gaminess (I wish there was some). The fried duck was deeper flavoured and more moist than typical deep fried chicken ayam penyet style.
The fried duck was enjoyed with bright fiery fresh ground chili pepper splashed with hot oil (sambal korek).
The soft tender rice boiled with stock used to cook duck was lightly greased and gently spiced. It was nice and I dribbled a bit of sambal kicap (dark soy sauce with chili) on it.
Deep fried crispy crumbs (known as kremes) from rice flour and stock from cooking the duck added flavour and crunch to the dish.
We also ordered deep fried duck skin but it was sold out. Shall be back for it on a weekday when the restaurant will be less crowded.
Added the obligatory oxtail soup, and it turned out to be a winner.
The bowl was loaded with soup, potato, carrot, and oxtail.
The soup was medium bodied, spice profile reminded me of soto ayam but more robust, more depth, and beefy, of course.
Everything in the bowl was boiled till soft including the oxtail. The fat, meat, sinew, soft tissue, all were fall-off-the-bone tender (perhaps, a bit too soft). The taste of spice, aromatics and beef was pronounced.
If you love oxtail dishes, do not skip this.
Me.... I would come into Bebek Goreng Pak Ndut, just to have this oxtail soup.
Tauhu telur, fried tofu and egg blend set on a shallow paddle of sweetened soy sauce.
Bedek goreng is a nice alternative to fried chicken dishes, especially for duck lovers. The oxtail soup here is a must for beef lovers. The tauhu telur was alright.
