CLOSED Restoran Causeway Nasi Padang Ina off Jalan Lingkaran Dalam near junction with Jalan Sultan Ibrahim, Johor Bahru

Sambal-Catfish

CLOSED. Restoran Causeway is probably the most popular nasi padang restaurant within walking distance from the immigration building in Johor Bahru.

During lunch Restaurant Causeway is filled with workers and staff from government departments nearby. It is not that there is a lack of choice in this area, in fact, this part of JB is spoilt for choice when it comes to options for lunch. It is just that people are drawn to the delicious food at reasonable prices at Restoran Causeway.

The tiny Restoran Causeway which had been here for over twenty years is lined with food on tables and shelves, and filled with people milling around inside scooping food onto their plates.

Everything is very causal and informal here. Customers take their plate of white rice from the lady boss, and then go round to pick any amount and type of food they fancy.

The staff will then tally up the bill according to what is on the plate. Simple, transparent and straightforward.

Today, I treated myself to my usual favourites which were beef rendang, spicy sambal catfish and stir fried bean sprouts.

Beef-Rendang

Restoran Causeway's beef rendang was one of the best I have tasted.

The meat was tender and saturated with rich aromatic spices. It was like eating perfumed meat. Each bite sent a waft of delicate perfume up my nose. The ends of my lips curled upwards unconsciously in a smile of delight.

Sambal Catfish

The popular spicy sambal catfish was delicious.

The catfish was fried in oil and then drenched in a sambal of asam, spices, fresh chilies, lime and onions.

The catfish flesh soft and relatively bland, complemented the spicy hot, sourish and tangy sambal gravy very well.

I liked the stir fried bean sprouts too. Lightly tossed in a hot wok, the bean sprouts garnished with cut chilies, carrots, and spring unions retained their natural juices and sweetness.

I was told even the Sultan of Johor and his staff are known to visit Restaurant Causeway for their nasi padang.

->> Lots of delicious nasi padang selection that make lunch something to look forward to for many people working around the area. Their beef rendang is one of the best in JB.

  1. After seeing that photo on FB of course i had to check your blog up. I've never tried the nasi padang there. My mom tend to get it from the one on Jalan Ibrahim, not sure what it's called and not even sure if it's still there. But i will put this on my list for next time I'm home :-)
