Yellow Corner Nasi Lemak in Kulai, Johor

William and I were on a whole day Skudai-Kulai food trail since 6:00am in the morning. We were dead tired by the time we arrived to check out the famous Yellow Corner Nasi Lemak in Kulai.

Yellow Corner Nasi Lemak is easy to locate as it is next to a large corner house off Jalan Pinang 1, and you can't miss the bright lights and cars parked by the road side.

Or, you can just ask any Kulai person for directions. Everyone, yes everyone in Kulai, knows Yellow Corner nasi lemak.

Though exhausted, the moment we arrived at Yellow Corner, we felted energized by the humming crowd and buzz. Yellow Corner obviously has the support of the locals going by the huge crowd on a Saturday night.

People of all communities and ages were enjoying nasi lemak and teh tarik (tea) here. It's a very Malaysian makan (eating) place.

We were eager to find out what drew the crowd to Yellow Corner.

I watched what was going on in the kitchen while we waited for our nasi lemak to arrive. The kitchen was a dazzling whirl of activity to churn out the orders as quickly as possible.

It was a very well oiled and efficient assembly line. But, I did wondered, how good can assembly line food be?

Our nasi lemak arrived in about 15 minutes despite the crowd. As we did not specify the chicken part that we wanted, we were given the default fried chicken breast.

I felt a tinge of regret as I am a plump chicken thigh person :P

As it turned out, I needn't fret.

The golden brown fried crispy chicken breast was tender and moist inside with a nice chicken flavour. One of the best fried chicken breasts that I have eaten :D

The coconut flavoured rice was tender and the loose grains separated easily. The rice were of good, long grain quality.

The large dollop of sambal was mildly spicy and had a distinct anchovy flavour which I liked very much.

Besides their famous nasi lemak, Yellow Corner also serves a variety of local favourites.

->> Yellow Corner is indeed a nice place for a simple delicious meal, and a good homely place to chill with family and friends. This is a local Kulai folk favourite.

No wonder then that it is so popular.

  1. Tony, compared to Wak Kentut, how does this one rate? I've tried the nasi lemak and fried chicken at Wak Kentut, and I don't think it's as good as what most people make it out to be...

    1. Wak kentut used to be very good but nowadays, the fried chicken is "dryer". From my own preference, I do like Yellow corner more than Wak Kentut. If you like fried chicken rice, Mc-cola or Xiao lee nasi lemak are some other nice choice!

Wak kentut & Yellow corner- Malay
      Mc-cola & Xiao Lee- Chinese

I'm from Kulai by the way~ hope you enjoy the food here~ ^_^

    3. I gotta agree with Audrey. I just tried Wak Kentut again on 11 Feb 2019 and the fried chicken was indeed dry and didn't have much flavour. But the coconut rice was very aroma and flavoursome. The sambal chili was great too.

    4. I tried both places today.

Pricewise, nasi lemak with chicken (no egg) at Wak Kentut costs RM6.50 while the same costs RM6.40 at Yellow Corner.

The nasi lemak rice at Wak Kentut is very lemak with a pronounced coconut milk flavour. The yellow nasi lemak at Yellow Corner had little lemak and minimal coconut milk. It reminded me more of nasi minyak.

I got chicken thighs at both places. The chicken thigh at Wak Kentut was drier and less flavourful than that at Yellow Corner.

Ambiencewise, Wak Kentut was more crowded when I went at 6.10pm compared to Yellow Corner at 8.10 pm. Yellow Corner had better hygiene with no flies while Wak Kentut had flies all over!

Best deal is to purchase the rice at Wak Kentut and the chicken at Yellow Corner. And maybe eat at home.

I went yesterday around 7.50PM, everything was dark and no preparations were in place.
