Johor Kaki in National Geographic Traveler

Johor Kaki was very honoured to be involved in the May 2015 issue of National Geographic Traveler magazine.

The issue featured an article "Jewel of Malaysia" written by award winning author John Krich. It's about John's personal journey and encounters in Johor.

I had the privilege to meet with John and together we walked the old, historic part of Johor Bahru along Jalan Tan Hiok Nee, Jalan Trus, Jalan Wong Ah Fook and Meldrum Walk.

John described Johor Kaki as one of those renegade Singaporeans seeking refuge from generic air conditioned shopping mall food courts to the imagined nether world of food alleys of Johor Bahru :-D

Actually, I am just a sentimental fellow searching for the flavours, aromas and mouth feel of my childhood food ;-p

In the dim, wet, dingy back alley pompously named "Meldrum Walk", I tried to interest John in stingray smothered with pungent spicy chili paste, pork intestines, skin, tongue and ears braised in soya sauce and herbs, as well as many other everyday things which John found extraordinary.

John described it all so vividly in his article, through the fresh eyes of a seasoned traveler in a new place.

A picture I took of the durian strudel at Niniq's was also featured in National Geographic Traveller magazine.
