Kak Kak Dim Sum Breakfast @ Jalan Maju near Plaza Pelangi 佳佳点心茶楼

Need early breakfast in JB, on the way up north to Malacca or KL? Restoran Kak Kak opens at 5:00am 6:30am and conveniently located just next to Plaza Pelangi (5 mins drive from JB CIQ off Jalan Tebrau). Nothing exquisite but plenty to choose from, freshly made, tastes good, and very reasonably priced kopitiam dim sum.

Kak Kak dim sum is a long time favourite among locals, so it is always packed. Try to be early.

Simple, unassuming shop lot and shop front but there is a lot more than meets the eye.

At the back of the dining hall, dim sum is still made the same old way by hand and with seasoned bamboo steaming trays and tall steel steaming towers.

The boss rushing to feed the full house of customers in front. Mr Wong has been running Kak Kak for more than 30 years now.

Ordering cannot be easier. The friendly staff will push the trays of dim sum around the tables. Just point to what you like - there is no need to know the names of the dishes 🤭

I like this ordering system because it is hassle free and I actually don't know the names of many of the dim sum 😝

Feast your eyes 😄

Nothing exquisite or dainty in this parade. But, there's lots to choose from, including some which I have not seen before. Most are chunky, meaty and filling. The flavours are mostly mildly savoury and sweet, leaning on the sweeter side compared to other dim sum places.

We had a lot of small dishes of dim sum (lost count 😝 ). Two of us were completely filled and our bill (with drinks) came to RM31 (2015 prices).

I enjoyed my breakfast experience here.

👉 Highly recommended friendly pit stop to carb up, get caffeine and freshen up for the drive up north to Malacca or Kuala Lumpur. Plenty of choices, freshly made. Just need to be early as crowds are expected, especially on weekends.

  1. Omg, it looks so damn good. It's times like this when company helps you try more foods! Love the way they serve the dimsum, I'd be eating that breakfast, lunch and dinner!

  2. Went to Kak Kak yesterday for brunch, its on jalan maju (the mcdonalds entrance of plaza pelangi, just a couple of doors away from the 7-11).
Never been there before but i made a beeline for it after reading johorkaki's review- finally good and affordable dimsum not too far away. Quite regret going so late (10.30am) as a lot of stuff had run out, but they still had ample supply of the classics like har gau (crystal prawn dumplings) and siu mai (minced pork dumpling) were extremely satisfying.
We had so many different types to eat it would be a mini essay if i described all of them, so to keep it short i'll just say it was excellent for coffeeshop dimsum, and in a convenient location. They are very busy so dont expect restaurant level service, you pretty much have to go up and serve yourself. For three of us, including some items to take away for a snack later, it cost 42 ringgit. Pretty darn good considering how greedy we were.
Special mention goes to the "liang teh" (cooling tea). The candied wintermelon and other ingredients were thinly sliced, unlike other places which usually filter them out, and was very enjoyable, adding texture to the drink.

  5. The Lor Mai Gai & coffee are very good. The baos are ok. I would go back for these.
Maybe bcos we were there late, the steamed items were actually taken out from the freezer, in frozen state, to be steamed.
Friendly staff who allowed us to buy from other shops (fried bee hoon & mee) to be eaten at Kai Kai.
Group of 7, RM 99 including coffee.
