🐔 Chicken House Kampong Chicken Rice at Upper Thomson Singapore is one of my pre-blogging long time favourites. I like it that the food here is tasty and the pricing is very competitive.
For 13 years, since 2002, Chicken House stood out from the hundreds of chicken rice shops or stalls in Singapore by being a kampung chicken specialist.
Simple shop lot, bright, clean, cool and airy, so it is very comfortable here at Chicken House.
A weathered poster stuck to the wall with tape, extolling the virtues of the kampong birds 😄
The thing is, Chicken House does not charge a premium for its kampung chicken or free range chicken 走地雞. This half a bird costs SGD12, the same price which most hawker centre chicken rice stalls are charging for generic battery raised, hormone fattened American broilers 肉雞.
The kampung chicken flesh was tender, smooth and juicy with a nice squeaky bite (i.e. not mushy soft). It has more chicken flavour than most American broilers though less than what I expected from kampung chicken.
Still, it's a delicious poached chicken, ranking up there among the
best in Singapore.
The simple savoury sweet dressing sauce was forgettable - it's just as well, so it does not compete with the natural flavours of kampung chicken.
The good quality rice grains were cooked till fluffy, tender yet still nutty with a nice bite. The grains were lightly coated with gently aromatic chicken oil and broth, and was not overly greasy.
We helped ourselves to the condiments in a neat steel caddie on each table.
The chili packed a spicy hot sting (with sourish notes) that lingers in the mouth. The ginger dip was mildly spicy with green ginger flavour. The dark soy sauce was mainly savoury salty.
The simple clear chicken soup was naturally sweetened with chopped cabbage.
The plate of crunchy gizzard and pasty chicken liver was delicious, and all for SGD1 (2015 price).
These were no foie gras by any means, of course, but hey, it's among the best chicken liver I've tried at a chicken rice stall - soft grainy mushy moist with very mild liver flavour. Good stuff.
The boiled gizzards were good too. Clean tasting, tenderly crunchy best eaten with the chili or ginger dip.
One of our favourite side dishes here at Chicken House is their chicken ngoh hiang 雞肉五香. SGD4 for small serving.
Crispy outside, the moist soft and crunchy chicken, water chestnut and yam roll is eaten with a dipping sauce almost like honey with a subtle savoury note.
Yummy.
If you are wondering why there is a big red crab on Chicken House's green signboard, it's because the restaurant serves Teochew style cold crabs on Fridays and Weekends 😄

Chicken House's winning formula seems to be good food at very competitive prices. Service is prompt and friendly too. Check it out and see if it suits your taste buds.
Free parking is available right in front of Chicken House but you have to be extremely lucky to get a slot. More free parking is available at the private housing estate around the area, a short walk away.
