Joez Coconut Jelly in Penang Georgetown Dato Karamat JK1300
Michael was raving since day 1 of our trip about his family's must have coconut jelly in Penang. But, our busy programme was very tight - on the road the whole time through Langkawi, Alor Star, Butterworth and Penang. We finally managed to check in at Joez Coconut Jelly along Jalan Dato Karamat just before boarding the plane in Penang on day 5 ;-P
Be prepared to enjoy your coconut jelly with a large heap of coconuts right beside you. Loads of fresh coconuts are brought to the shop everyday. These are said to be pandan coconuts which are supposedly sweeter and more fragrant.
Only three items on the menu, prominently displayed on the wall.
Coconut milk is squeezed out of the white pulp, right here at the shop while we eat :-D
If you order coconut juice, they will just lob the top off a coconut at the stem, pour out the juice and there you have it.
Pure natural nectar.
Our coconut jelly on the way.
Coconut jelly is not hard to find in Penang but Joez is reputedly the stall which invented this dessert. Joez is the stall that popularised the dessert.
The very light jiggly soft coconut jelly. It has a gently sweet flavour and slight refreshing coconut fragrance. The chilled soft jelly will literally melt in the warm mouth back into coconut juice releasing coconut flavour and fragrance.
The jelly was so addictive, I can't help but dig deeper into the coconut to prise out the soft ivory white flesh. Coconut juice, coconut jelly, young coconut flesh - quite a potent potion.
After the coconut jelly, I couldn't resist the coconut shake. It's a delicious creamy sweet drink though it tastes more of vanilla than coconut. The black balls are flavourless but have an interesting bouncy gummy bite.
Happy faces after all the coconuts :-D
Next time I am in Penang, I am sure to go for the coconut jelly again and also coconut juice (which I missed this round).
