MOVED Wanton Mee Noodle @ Restoran No Signboard Maju Jaya JB

MOVED. Reader J.S. recommended me his favourite wanton noodle stall in JB. It's the wanton mee stall at Restoran No Signboard along Jalan Maju or 報紙街 newspaper street as the locals know it due to the number of newspapers and publishers located along this old street.

Typical of little stalls in Malaysia, this stall has no name too. The signboard just shows what the stall serves, namely, wanton noodle, shrimp dumplings, curry laksa and chicken curry noodles.

Stall holder Mdm Au Yong used to run an "economic rice" stall in Taman Johor Jaya for 20 years before moving here in Taman Maju Jaya. With age catching up, Mdm Au Yong switched to selling wanton noodle as it is more manageable than a complex "economic rice" stall at her age. Mdm Au Yong runs the wanton mee stall alone, with her little grand daughter helping out during school breaks.

The simple wanton noodle with char siew and the accompanying small bowl of broth with wanton dumplings.

When we tossed the noodles with the blended greasy sauce, the aroma of lard rises to our nose.

Fans of Ho Meng Kee's noodles will be glad to know that Mdm Au Yong gets her supplies from 何明記 one of JB's leading whole egg noodle makers. Ho Meng Kee's crinkly noodles are quite light. Personally, I like my noodles to be heavier.

Mdm Au Yong cooks the noodle soft al dente with a light bounce to the bite.

The char siew is typical of JB style, lean and skinny which pales in comparison with the KL benchmark ....

The very thin smooth wanton skin wraps minced pork and shrimp which gave the filling a pinkish colour. The little knob of filling tastes fresh and naturally sweet. The simple clear anchovy broth was flavoursome too.

Mdm Au Yong makes her own crunchy pickled green chili.

We also tried Mdm Au Yong's curry laksa (RM5). I opted to have whole egg noodles in the laksa broth. I like the flavoursome mildly spicy creamy broth (made with evaporated milk and spices). The ingredients like fried yong tau fu were delicious too. Mdm Au Yong makes a good sambal chili that gives her curry laksa that extra kick.

Mdm Au Yong and grand daughter Yvonne taking a break between customers. During school break, little Yvonne helps grandma takes orders, delivers, collects money, gives change, collects used bowls and utensils, and washes them clean.

  1. Good review. Thanks for profiling Auntie Au Yong. She was operating from a kopitiam in Taman Molek, and shifted to Jln Maju only recently. Nice noodles deserving of our support.

    Cheers,
    Gavin

  3. nice to see kids helping out from an early age. no amount of tuition or university lessons can match real world experience.
