Jalan Sultan Teochew Porridge KL Chinatown ⭐⭐⭐⭐✱

Peter and I were wrapping up our day long exploration of the old school eateries and hipster cafes around KL's Petaling area. Our tummies full, we were walking towards the Pasar Seni LRT station to make our way home. Then, we passed this Teochew porridge stall at a side lane along Jalan Sultan. The cheerful stall holders were just laying out trays full of their hot, freshly cooked food.

We were ogling at the trays of hot food as the stall holders laid them out at the side lane stall. They invited us to sit down but we demurred as we were really full then. The cheerful Chow brothers were great salesmen charming us with their winsome smiles and humourous banter in Cantonese.

But, we really needed little persuasion. You'll see why - the food speaks for itself. Though humble familiar dishes, it's all home cooked style, heartwarming dishes.

Enough said 😃😋

So, we perched on flimsy stackable plastic stools at a foot path along busy, dusty Jalan Sultan and had Teochew porridge like a local 😃

The porridge was perfectly softened rice grains suspended in cloudy watery rice gruel. The ingredients were fresh. The flavours were gentle savoury sweet so that we could taste the natural sweetness of the fresh ingredients. The dishes were humble but very tasty and comforting.

Then, we heard Uncle Chow calling out, "red rubies, red rubies.... 紅寶石... 紅寶石... ". Like a good foodie, I jumped up to investigate.

They were pork blood curd - gems indeed to Singaporeans as animal blood is banned on their sunny island.

All our food came to a grand total of RM24 (2016 price).

The cheerful Chow brothers and their family have been running this Teochew porridge stall for decades moving up and down this dingy,  dark side lane. The brothers started working at the stall in 1969 and their dad established the stall decades earlier. Truly a KL Chinatown institution.

4-Star (out of 5). Love this Jalan Sultan side lane Teochew porridge stall. All humble dishes but this is a first class, premium experience for me. Friendly service, good food, authentic local experience (dusty street side ambiance), over value for money. I will be back 😃

Thank you for featuring them, they are perhaps the last authentic Teochew spread for economy rice in KL. Whenever I eat here I remember my childhood".
