A trip to Meng Kee Char Siew King in Glenmarie Shah Alam is like a homecoming. I was a regular at Meng Kee's old shop at Tengkat Tung Shun, a back street of KL's touristy Jalan Bukit Bintang - it's our regular lunch place nearly 2 decades ago. Lots of people eat at the stuffy old Meng Kee in smart office clothes with sleeves rolled up and sweat rolling down from our brows.
Meng Kee have moved from it's quaint dinghy charming city centre premise to this plain shop lot in industrial Glenmarie Shah Alam, about 30 minutes' drive away (without traffic). This was the lunch time crowd - Meng Kee is popular as ever. Cantonese roasts and Eason Chan ballads heard above the buzz of a hundred chattering voices is part and parcel of this KL culinary experience.
Service is clock work efficient and table turn over is fast - so we could get a table quickly and food was served in a jiffy.
Our order had a bit of everything that is famous at Meng Kee - char siew, siew cheong 烧肠 and chicken.
The total bill for all this food with drinks came to RM45.70.
Meng Kee's char siew has a bit of black char at the edges and glitter from caramelised sugar outside. Inside, there is tender moist lean meat and juicy fat. The flavour is savoury sweet, leaning slightly on the savoury side.
Meng Kee's char siew is good but this is KL - a place blessed with too many outstanding char siew shops 😄 Preference for taste profile is subjective but there are many places in KL where the texture of char siew is more tender and juicy 👈 click.
The poached chicken chopped in large chunks came bathed in an aromatic splash of sesame oil, light soy sauce and cooking oil.
Meng Kee's chicken is awesome 😮 The meat is very tender and juicy. The skin is slippery smooth. The meat has very nice natural chicky sweetness complemented with mildly aromatic savoury sweet dressing sauce. I love this 🐔
For my next visit to Meng Kee, I shall indulge in at least half a bird 😂
I love Meng Kee's siew cheong. The tender grainy minced pork and liver inside is wrapped with a stretched thin, slightly crunchy skin. The flavour is a perfect balance of savoury sweet for me (siew cheong is often too salty but it is just nice here at Meng Kee).
👍 Must Order the siew cheong at Meng Kee.
Simple soft crunchy blanched bean sprouts with light watery savoury sweet sauce. Slightly over done.
Egg noodles with nice light spring and gooey savoury sweet sauce.
Can't think of anything nice to say about this lumpy rice 😂 ok.... it's not greasy and has a slight chicky flavour.
4-Star (out of 5). The individual items are a mixed bag - good char siew, excellent siew cheong, great chicken, so-so bean sprouts, meh rice, and good egg noodles - but when eaten together, it's a great Malaysian lunch experience. Meng Kee is still one of my favourite KL lunch joints after all these years. I especially love their poached chicken.
